I wonder how difficult it might be to make a "general" tiefling variant so that it would not be exactly similar to the MToF counterparts for copyright.
For example, abilities like:
Ability Score Increase: Increase one score of your choice by 2 and another score by 1.
Accursed Legacy: Your lineage is drawn from a powerful devil or demon, granting you innate magical abilities. You know one cantrip of your choice from any spell list. Once you reach 3rd level, you know one spell of 1st level from any spell list and can cast it once using this trait; you regain the ability to cast it when you finish a long rest. Once you reach 5th level, know one spell of 2nd level from any spell list and can cast it once using this trait; you regain the ability to cast it when you finish a long rest. You can also cast either of those spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).
This would leave it open ended to either select the spells associated with one of the MToF variants or build your own based on a different hellish entity. Although I wonder if it might be better to restrict the spell list or schools of magic or not.
Also, not sure how easy this is to actually do (mechanically speaking) within the homebrew builder tool

That's definitely doable with the homebrewer, but it doesn't account for how some of the MToF tieflings cast their 1st-level spell at 2nd-level (much like the OG's Hellish Rebuke), while the others don't.

Huh. That is interesting. I dont play Tieflings super often so I hadnt noticed that in many cases they get a free upcast as part of their innate spellcasting

Fair enough. I've not had a play with the homebrew creator yet, will give it a look.
