So here is my question and I know it is left open ended by the DM Handbook and the Players Handbook, but I was wondering if there was a codification for the military ranks. I saw an example in the same sheet for the Dwarf with the Soldier Background that he was a Sergeant with a mercenary company. So any suggestions for example for a rank structure break down. For example maybe a former captain of friendly army or even a veteran of the current unit. Want to see if anyone had suggestions. Hell, maybe even throw in a small pension if the story fits.

It greatly depends on the military structure of the society the person serves in, it can be as simple as soldier or leader or more complex as in a lot of militaries here on earth.
This question has also been asked before on the forums so if you do a search you might find some goof info in past posts.
I know this is old, but even in modern militaries, the rank structure can be vastly different. Even the concept of Non-commissioned officers where 'lower class' individuals can hold authority has waxed and waned. I believe a solid D&D rank structure is either traditional medieval or roman style rank structure.
