There's nothing wrong with WOTC spending oodles of their own money to get something working that's (at best) just another video game. The contention of fans is that One D&D will not be the panacea of this idea and will take 10-20 years to become anything viable. The first cell phone was made in the 70's and took over 25 years to become something viable. If WOTC wants to spend millions of dollars on this effort, than so be it. Most fans aren't interested in supporting a fledgling idea that monetizes the game in ways most D&D fans aren't interested in pursuing. Don't lump this alpha project into One D&D and expect people to pay for it. Most of us want to socialize, meet people, play a game with no borders, and have that human TTRPG experience.
