Reading through the new compendium I found that I really enjoy this new book. It offers cool insight to the conflicts of the DND world and can help with optimizing your tielfings, cults and more. The new monsters this book has to offer are pretty interesting to me and can't wait to try them out. Now, here's the big down fall of this book for me. They didn't add Giff as a playable race. I was SO looking forward to being a military hippo, now the Gith race looks decently interesting but I really wanted to play as a military hippo (never thought I'd say that). So overall Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes is pretty good but I do wish I could play as a Giff.

As someone running a campaign involving a massive cult of Glasya, I'm a fan. Lots of new fiends to play with, and some good stories about Glasya to use as flavor.
Kinda meh, to be honest. I expected something a little more like Volo's where there wasn't just walls of text but also helpful aids like with the maps and locations. Some graphical displays of the layering of the planes and cosmological wheel or something more than just swathes and swathes of, quite frankly, very bland lore. And if there was ever a book that should offer more variety to the genasi, this would've been it. Some planar-based spells (like navigation or survival), or magical items, or even some sub-classes revolving around the lower planes would've been appreciated. Instead, we get why halflings are a dumb race.

"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
I haven't read through all of it yet, but I have enjoyed it so far! The information behind the elves really gave me a different perspective on how to incorporate that society into my campaigns. Not sure if it's just me, but chapters 3 - 5 seemed short, like there was more that we could have gotten there and puts more emphasis on this book being about the Blood War and Elves.
I also found the mention of Mordenkainen being about Balance only half fulfilled. They talk about Law vs. Chaos, but not about Good vs. Evil and how that factors into this Balance. Seems like a missed opportunity.
This. I mean, seriously, if this were Elminster's book, we'd absolutely see more spells, but Mordy gets the shaft. Also, an apology for the sword spell would've been great in the disclaimer. The disclaimer in this book was, like much of it, really bland.
This book, to me, is the Storm King's Thunder of the rules books.

This ! I think the book is lacking a lot of stat blocks from the archdevils. otherwise the lore is awesome, but the way they spoke about it, i thought we'd get more then 3 archdevils compared to the 9 demon lords we already have.

I think it’s absolutely awesome. I would like stats for Loth (in her description it says that she will often appear in physical form, and that means that it’s likely for a party to encounter her) and stats for the Bebilith demon mentioned.
This isn't actually a signature, just something I copy and paste onto the bottom of all my posts. Or is it? Yep, it is. Or is it..? I’m a hobbit, and the master cranial imploder of the "Oops, I Accidently Destroyed Someone's Brain" cult. Extended sig. I'm actually in Limbo, it says I'm in Mechanus because that's where I get my WiFi from. Please don't tell the modrons, they're still angry from the 'Spawning Stone' fiasco. No connection to Dragonslayer8 other than knowing them in real life.
I like it for the additional, more exotic monsters, I hate it for the lore. In my world whatever is inside it lore-wise are just apocryphal ramblings of a misplaced wizard.

I hate to continue to revive this old thread, but I just wanted to comment on what you said? I'm guessing your world is Greyhawk based on what you mentioned. I too run that world, and was disappointed that MORDENKAINEN's Tome said next to nothing about his own home world.

I actually run in the Realms where he currently is (insane in the books). Those changes have a potential to retro-alter the history of the Realms so, like FR Wikia, I treat them like they should be treated - "that one guy who thinks different".

ah, my mistake then. I assumed you were referring to the one line of text in the Tome where he mentions Greyhawk, and him(Mordenkainen) being misplaced meaning either in Ravenloft or the Realms.

I am waiting for it to be available through the offline app before I give it a good read through.

I quite liked it, but there were a few things I thought were lacking:

I personally like the law vs chaos approach, good vs evil is ok but it’s cool to see how law and chaos fit into the mix
Also yes we should have had more Giff
