our group started out using D&D3.5 and i wanted to build an Eldritch Scion. So i planned to go Warlock (2)/Cleric of Tymora (3) and then build into Eldritch Scion (healing the group with multiple eldritch blasts seemed a fun idea).
We are currently lvl5, when the group decided to transition the whole group into D&D5E, but limit ourselves to the Players Handbook & the Dungeon Masters guide (on additional books permitted). Now, with prestige classes gone and feats tied to class level not character level, multiclassing is somewhat discouraged. And i wonder how i could build a similar character.
So far i am pondering if i should make a Human Cleric (5) with Trickery Domain & Magic Initiate feat on lvl1 - for eldritch Blast, just to stay in character.... or is there a different way to keep an effective eldritch blast, while still being the main party healer?
It’s not in the PHB, but there’s a celestial warlock who can do some healing. I’m playing one now and I’m the main healer, though we also have someone with 1 level of cleric and a Druid in the party, so there’s other folks tossing heals around.
It’s equal as l parts fun and annoying because I only have 2 spell slots (like most all warlocks), but I can really only use one of them because I save the other for a revivify in case someone drops. So it’s a tactical challenge in deciding which spells to use for my one slot, while also frustrating that I only, effectively, get one. Luckily eldritch blast as good enough that I still feel like I’m contributing.
Your cleric with warlock initiate is probably your best bet. I would probably take Eldritch blast and chill touch as my cantrips and witchbolt as my L1 spell giving me some solid spell based offense and then go heavily into the heal and support mode with my clerical spells.
Eldritch Blast without any of the Invocations isn't a huge cantrip. Just something to keep in mind if you go with Magic Initiate: Warlock
Yes, i realized that. Since we transition already existing characters i try to get as close as possible to the original 3.5 character and still be as effective as possible as a healer. The Eldritch Scion would have been great - but things stand right now, i think full cleric with Magic Initiate is the best way to go, because actually multiclassing would require at least 2 levels of warlock.
Maybe i can convince my DM to allow the Eldritch Adept feat from Tasha, then i would consider dipping 1 level into warlock and at least grab Agonizing Blast...
With just the PHB you're going to be a bit MAD. For Level 5, I would do a half-elf 3 lvl Life Domain Cleric/ 2 lvl Fiend Warlock then continue cleric. This will give you temp hitpoints when you kill something, allow you to get EB 2 invocations for Agonizing Blast and whichever other one sounds good for your build. Also, will allow you to max out the healing, still get 9th lvl spells and have 2 1st level spell slots that reset on a short rest for clutch healing words.
Strength needs to be at least a 15 for Heavy Armor. Dex only matters for Initiative but you want to be going later anyway to help support your allies. Max out WIS then CON then CHA. You can dump INT
I suggest War Caster and Resilient CON to fortify Con saves for concentration I don't know how many other feats you can get through the build as you'll need your ASIs to bump your stats but Shield Master can help shore up some Dex Saves and tough for extra Hit Points.

Hi,

Wisea$$ DM and Player since 1979.
This was my first thought as well but the OP mentioned only using PHB subclasses.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
