I would point out that a purple worm has an attack bonus of +14, so it's going to hit AC 25 half the time, and that's a perfectly reasonable foe for 9th level PCs, so "don't worry about it" is an entirely viable option.
My DM was not fond of my ancient paladin/hexblade. I had 23 AC from armour and defensive and access to the shield spell. Just use dex saves was his answer however my team had my auras to add +5 to saves and half damage to spells. I had also taken shield master for the mini evasion. The rest of the party were also Paladin and x multiclasses. Our informal party nickname was The Roaches. Great fun for the players but we burnt out the DM for a while.
you've already let him have it...it's a little late now. Your legendary purple worm has a cult that worships it...and they can cast spells. area effects and saving throw spells will hurt him. And they cast slow which reduces his AC and does other hampering stuff. BTW, i was recently in a one shot with a legendary purple worm that has cultists on SPG so the idea isn't mine. He (Adjorr is the DM) does run that one again once in a while but I don't think it's up right now.
Or, a whole clan of LG dwarves show up saying the armor belongs/ed to their great hero Ivan Grogbeard (King Griogbeard); It was stolen, and they want it back. They are willing to pay for it, or give him a different item (you choose some you are ok with) but they will not take no for an answer and they are too high level and too many to fight and they have spellcasters. Plus, they have an agreement with whatever country you are in, so they have a valid legal claim. Killing them makes you criminals. Lawful members of your party and probably dwarves won't be ok fighting them. And make sure you are ok with items you give the party in the future.
I think some clarification on how their AC got to 25 (note: based on the build, a shield +2 or some combo of ring of prot, Cloak of Protection, and a shield +1 would do it.)
The next highest is 20. What about the other 3? What are their roles. If he's the only melee and the rest stay at a distance you can throw big beefy boys at him with impunity.
