I've recently started using D&D Beyond's built-in map application. I've been trying to find how to add custom tokens, and found only *one* answer, which was creating an unassigned character and setting it's profile pic to whatever you'd want the token to be.
Is this the only way to do this? And if so, how would you do it so the players would not see the unassigned character?
I don't think it's laziness to not have unique art for all 2,500+ monsters. It's something largely infeasible but will improve over time. I believe it's been stated that the 2024 monster manual will have even more art that before
I am going to be honest, this is one of the more frustrating aspects of the maps. Sometimes I just want a simple token, not an entire character sheet. I wish there was a way to quickly add tokens without going through the home-brew creator. I know it only takes a few minutes, but at times I want to just add a token from an image very quickly.
I dont think representing those aspects of the map are what the software is intended for. Micro managing furniture and elements of the scene is where imagination or the actual map design comes in. The purpose of MAPS was to allow tactical combat with Beyonds other systems ie. monsters and characters.
There are other tabletops that do have those features though so your not far off in wanting it.

Easiest way is make a homebrew creature and give it a “token” image and bring into the encounter builder and will load a token that way.
Thank you so much! That's a great idea.
Where do you add this token image in the monster creator?
Basic Information segment at the bottom it says, Large avatar or Small Avatar, upload accordingly.
I've been searching for a way to do this. Thanks!
the problem I have is even existing monsters have no token art.....lazy wotc?

Also maps is still on Alpha. If this was a full release i'd be more nit picky. But right now I'm its pretty good.
Its not that they dont have art...its just that they arent using the art they have to populate the token
Every monster that has art is using that art on the token.

I'd love to see non-monster tokens, like tables and chests for inside of a dungeon and perhaps boats or fences for outside scenes.
or even groups of condensed people or animals. this is an amazing idea
I love the idea of condensed groups. That would be neat for like prisoners or bystanders during a city fight.
Long way to go to match Roll 20. But there is hope
