So I recently played my very first one shot using dnd beyond for my character. The dm provided a link where I could build my character and he notified that he would have additional content on his account that we would be able to use. I made a level 8 high elf cleric and I was curious to know if I had chosen something from the extended content he mentioned.
So I'm recreating the character in my account to see what options are different and already when I need to choose 1 cantrip for my high elf I notice that the one I chose before is not in my list in fact the list I have to choose from has 21 spells where his had 10 more.
Now my questions is, how does one get more that extra content? What is even available to purchase as add-ons? Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
If your DM has a Master Tier subscription to D&D Beyond, he is able to share all content that he has purchased on the site as well as any homebrew content that he has created. If you haven't purchased anything, all you have access to on your regular account is the material available in the Basic Rules. You can review the content in the D&D Beyond store to see what's available for purchase. Most character content is going to come from Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, or Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse, though many other sources have a little bit of content in them.
You also ought to be able to look at individual elements of your character on your DM's campaign and they should indicate what their source is. For example, if you're looking at those cantrips, when you select one on your character sheet it should list information like the casting time, components required, duration, and then source. When I select Hex (a 1st level spell) on my warlock character, I see a section on there with the following contents:
Casting Time: 1 bonus action
Range/Area: 90ft.
Components: V, S, M(the petrified eye of a newt)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 hour
Source: PHB, pg. 251
That bolded section indicates the spell comes from the Players Handbook, page 251 if you look in a physical copy of the book. You could then navigate to the Players Handbook in the store and purchase just that spell if you wanted (for $1.99, as that seems to be the smallest amount they are willing to charge for an individual item). Now, that's a lot of money for one spell, but that amount counts toward your full purchase of the book and the price on it goes down by that amount. Buy enough individual items from the same book and you'll get the book for free.
