I really like it! Fun for me as a pretty new player to see some older villains
It is the villain from a crappy children's saturday morning tv show...painted cool. This is not some lore famous villain from modules and cool stuff like the current one currently has on the cover....which I am not a massive fan of that cover either...they should have put Vecna on the cover if anything. The one-horned cloaked dude from the crappy D&D cartoon in the eighties on the cover is wild to me. He isn't an old villain to anyone except Presto and the crew lol. They ever even aired the final episode, and have the antagonist as the cover for the book is really weird. Should have grabbed someone from the lore or made it more like the 3rd edition books.

More people probably recognize that "crappy cartoon villain" than any antagonist from any module ever. Even Vecna, who's almost certainly by far the most famous one they have, has no particularly distinctive look AFAIK. He's a lich, who's missing a hand and eye. You can make a lich look good, but there's nothing you can really do to say "Vecna" over "generic lich"
And if they don't recognize Venger, it's still a perfectly fine design. He's a dude who looks distinctive.
Eh, a Beholder is far more likely to be recognised than that foe. I had no clue who it was, and I imagine many of us who joined during 5e would be in the same boat. Most people who play D&D would recognise someone like this, though:

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

10gp says a Beholder will be gracing one of the MM covers.
First of all, that cartoon was cutting edge if you were in middle school in the 80’s. Maybe you don’t like it, but do you need to get so angry about it? Let other people have their fun.
Second, that’s kind of the point, I’d bet. Put venger on the cover and newer people to the game won’t know who it is beyond some evil-looking dude. But the nostalgia factor might rope in some Gen-X folks who were on the fence. We’re a small and shrinking portion of the player base, but we’re also more likely to be the ones with the disposable income to make it a nostalgic impulse buy. It’s the definition of an Easter egg.
Also, I thought they had a new version of that cartoon in development. (Though I saw the live action show they were working on with paramount + isn’t going anywhere.) Could be a tie-in if they are rebooting the show.
Theres already a beholder on the cover of Xanathar’s.
I love all the magical effects on two covers that they've released so far. They look really cool in my opinion and seem more standout than the magic depicted on the 2014 covers. I don't know, they just catch my eye better and I like it.
I think the alt is cool, I don't think its intent is to make Lloth "nice." Rather, I think it probably shows how Drow under Lloth see her. She's weaving enchantment there. Like if adventurers with the right lore come across that inscribed in an Underdark structure, they know they may have a problem. Sort of a good symbol for a DMG I think.

Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
If I were in charge, and there's no chance of that happening, I'd issue all the books in a special first print run with Black covers and gold printing. There would be a filigree boarder and a fancy font that said "Dungeon Masters Guild, 6e", or "Player's Handbook, 6e", or "Monster Manual, 6e". The back cover would have the same filigree boarder but have some sort of runes on the back. For the PHB, it would be a circle of all the "Class Icons". For the MM it would be some sort of runes in Draconic or something. For the DMG it would be some sort of Alchemist's Circle with runes around that, or runes in the corners of the cover.
Then all other books would be printed with traditional covers like these after that. The traditional covers would be sold through all the usual outlets. To get the Black Books, while supplies last, you'd have to order them through WotC or the authorized distributor. I would expect those to go for a 50% premium.
I would do the same thing for rules supplements as they are released. I would have a run of X-copies in the black cover, and a standard cover for everything else.
If (when) any new iconic NPCs are developed, I would release a set of 25mm figures for those characters. I'd probably end up working with Hero Forge for that project.

I think Tiamat would also have more "aha!" to her as well, if you want a unique creature:

I like the STYLE of the art but it also seems to be making Lolth...."nice."
Sigh.

For anyone interested in the 80's cartoon, D&D has a channel on Plex that streams the episodes, and other D&D shows too.

I doubt the poor sod she's busy wrapping up thinks so...
There's already one on the MM too 😏
And the beholder you're referring to IS The (current) Xanathar.
I want the Alt cover
