Hello everybody and thank you for reading my thread. Here is my deal: I am looking at potentially printing the maps on canvas for our final sessions of the ToA campaign I am running. Mike Schley is selling the maps on his website and I am looking at a local company to print them for me on canvas. Having no experience with this, I am hoping to find some information on how well this would go and how terrible of an idea this will be. Does anyone have any experience with this?
How well will it go if I had the maps from the website printed to canvas? Will the resolution be even acceptable?
How large do I need to print at what resolution to (roughly) make the map 1" per square?
I cannot get a quote unless I have the file I want to print, so before I buy the maps: How stupid of an idea is this/how expensive will this be, can anyone provide me with a guesstimation?
I'm not sure if you've tried it but have you ever considered a projector? I picked a cheap one up for like $40 bucks at a 2nd hand store and i used it to project my maps onto my kitchen table and it was an amazing thing. There are tons of tutorials on how to use a projector for D&D maps too. https://100001****/
That is definitely a cheaper idea, and quite equally as cool, and could be a good idea. I will still be exploring the print option because I want to see if it is good enough to put up on my wall once we're done with it, but that is still a great idea, thank you :)
I've printed a few maps off DDB onto canvas and they've always come out really well. However I've never managed to get one with the squares the right size, partly because I'm also trying to convert US paper sizes they're formatted to into UK paper sizes which can be very different. As a result I mostly use it now for things like the world or region maps rather than the individual dungeons and there's something very satisfying about unrolling a map on the table for the first time
If you're buying them from a third party check their FAQs as it's possible they've included instructions on what sizes to print to get the scale right. The Castle Ravenloft maps I bought on DMs Guild did but I couldn't use them because of the paper size problem I mentioned
Brilliant, thank you! Can you give me a suggestion on the pricing? It's probably gonna be wildly off from what I'll be paying at my local shops, but knowing the price may be the difference between pulling the trigger or not for me :)
I’m paying £17 for A1 size maps and £30 for A0 (assuming those mean anything to you) however I’ve got the benefit of working at a university with its own print facilities so get them at a better rate than just going to the local shop. It’s too much for me to get every single map I need done like that but as I said getting the region map that you’ll be using every single session done has been really cool
Thanks, that is perfect. I am not American, so yes, A sizing is what I know :) I wasn't thinking of doing the region, but JUST the actual tomb maps, but it does sound somewhat reasonable to do to me.
Glad that helped. If you’re going to a print shop take along the original map and tell them what you need, I’m sure they’ll be able to help you work it out so you end up with proper 1 inch squares
