My mom had the basic set (the original boxed one that I still have) and I found it and asked about. It probably 1983 or so. She told me some about it and then I found some friends and we all played https://tutuapp.uno/ .
I found out about D&D in the 80's by watching for hours my friend's older brother running games when i was a kid. We were so amazed by all the strange dice rolling and voice making, the lead miniature figuring on maps , the action, the laughters etc...
I remember watching the older of my cousins playing as a kid during family gatherings with my uncle dming and I was so excited when I was first able to play. I was immediately hooked and have never left.
Early 90's for me. I seem to recall a certain CD that came with a starter pack demonstrating how to play? It might have been for a different RPG (we got into quite a few systems at the time), but maybe this rings a bell for other people because I will never forget these lines:
"I guess I'll be the cleric. Even though I don't know what that is..."
"Old man! What are you doing in this temple of evil!?"
These two things have been a running gag in my friend group (we were in late elementary school) since then.
I got introduced into RPG in the mid 80’s through Fighting Fantasy books from Steve Jackson. Later on I got to buy the BECMI box set and went through several modules as a player (Horror on the hill, Dread Island, Egg of the phoenix, Ravenloft…) before choosing the DM side. Got a break during college then went back to it a year ago thanks to Baldur’s Gate 3. So glad I did.
At age 8 (1980), I saw a teenager playing a solo game in 1st edition. My intrigue was shot down by my parents. Years later (1994), my first USAF supervisor and his wife ran 2nd edition campaigns. She was my first DM.
I joined recently, but am hooked for life. I joined a club in my area (my mom made me get out of the house since I was a hermit ever since Covid) and then from there I just became obsessed. Now I'm a DM with a campaign that has too many people wanting to join.
