My mom had the basic set (the original boxed one that I still have) and I found it and asked about. It probably 1983 or so. She told me some about it and then I found some friends and we all played https://tutuapp.uno/ .
I found out about D&D in the 80's by watching for hours my friend's older brother running games when i was a kid. We were so amazed by all the strange dice rolling and voice making, the lead miniature figuring on maps , the action, the laughters etc...
I remember watching the older of my cousins playing as a kid during family gatherings with my uncle dming and I was so excited when I was first able to play. I was immediately hooked and have never left.
Early 90's for me. I seem to recall a certain CD that came with a starter pack demonstrating how to play? It might have been for a different RPG (we got into quite a few systems at the time), but maybe this rings a bell for other people because I will never forget these lines:
"I guess I'll be the cleric. Even though I don't know what that is..."
"Old man! What are you doing in this temple of evil!?"
These two things have been a running gag in my friend group (we were in late elementary school) since then.
I got introduced into RPG in the mid 80’s through Fighting Fantasy books from Steve Jackson. Later on I got to buy the BECMI box set and went through several modules as a player (Horror on the hill, Dread Island, Egg of the phoenix, Ravenloft…) before choosing the DM side. Got a break during college then went back to it a year ago thanks to Baldur’s Gate 3. So glad I did.
At age 8 (1980), I saw a teenager playing a solo game in 1st edition. My intrigue was shot down by my parents. Years later (1994), my first USAF supervisor and his wife ran 2nd edition campaigns. She was my first DM.
I joined recently, but am hooked for life. I joined a club in my area (my mom made me get out of the house since I was a hermit ever since Covid) and then from there I just became obsessed. Now I'm a DM with a campaign that has too many people wanting to join.

I didn't even realize DnD was mentioned in ET? lol That's right at my age group.
but yeah, discovering the game and a love for it is pretty cool as I'm about to embark on my 40s.. I wish i found it earlier, like pandemic time maybe.. before that, im not sure I would have been interested.. or thought playing online was too difficult.
I was given a Box of D&D rulebooks for AD&D 2nd Edition along with some 1st E stuff, and started playing from there in the 90s. The game is much better now than it was then, so i have a lot more people willing to play with me.

In the fall of 1981, as I was starting 6th grade, my friend Steve said he had found a new game and wanted to get some kids together to play it. I went over his house that weekend and he had the Basic boxed set hidden in a cardboard box of clothes under his bed. You see - his family was VERY Irish Catholic and this was the heyday of the Satanic Panic. So I looked over the game and was immediately fascinated. We eventually got a group of a half dozen or so friends together and we would play every other week through middle school and high school.
I haven't seen most of those people in decades. But I'm still playing D&D every Wednesday with my current group.
In the 80s, the cartoon show but mainly the gamebooks "Endless Quest". In the 92 I bought a one-shot magazine about the TTRPGs, when Ediciones Zinco started to translate AD&D 2nd Ed.
