I really like the character creation tool but I have question. it seems like certain classes get the background traits options where you add things with dice table. This makes it easier to have a backstory for your character and I believe helps the character stats but im not sure on that.. Well some classes seem like that isn't an option.. like a Ranger.. or is it the background option that im picking?
It's entirely based on the background you chose. Class doesn't have anything to do with it. 2014 Background generally have suggested ideals, bonds, and flaws. The newer ones do not have them.
Certain subclasses also typically have a table you can pick from/roll on to give some form of specific detail to how you came to be associated with that subclass. It's all optional and just roleplay prompts, like the character/background traits- which they really needed to give more focus in the '24 PHB imo.
Are they just added flavor or like does it help your stats? Maybe I should get the 2014 handbook too lol
Greetings ModestKing3185,
If you already have the 2024 Players Handbook, and your DM is running sessions off of that, you will not need the 2014 Players Handbook.
Now, with that said, the 2014 PHB has some very good reference information like a decent list of Deities. WotC changed the way Backgrounds work between the 2014 and 2024 PHB, so if you are looking to get more Background info, it will be slightly different. Check with your DM, because if they already own it, once you are in a Campaign with them on DDB, then you will have access to all of their content if they have the Master Tier Subscription. That will save you having to buy the book :)
Cheers!

Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.

Thank you Sir :) Kinda unrelated to this, but are there any sourcebooks you would still recommend even if someone has started with 2024 ruleset? I do like exploring the lore but that's not all I'm looking for and with the changeover, it makes things a little muddy if there's other things that are essential. I don't have the core masters guide yet because I don't think I'll be in a position to DM yet but beyond that, I've looked at other source books and I don't want to get something that is obsolete with 2024 unless its worth it.
I'm also trying to avoid adventures and settings books because they don't feel necessary unless I DM.
So, i know many are fixated on stats, but the 2014 backgrounds did give features that really helped get you into the head of the character, and would help you play them well.
Lets take "Position of Privilege" from the Noble background "Thanks to your noble birth, people are inclined to think the best of you. You are welcome in high society, and people assume you have the right to be wherever you are. The common folk make every effort to accommodate you and avoid your displeasure, and other people of high birth treat you as a member of the same social sphere. You can secure an audience with a local noble if you need to."
this could help in a lot of intrigue or heist plots. You can secure an audience with the local nobles, bring your party as Guards, and then you have a chance to scope out their security and layout of their manor. You can also listen in on the nobles without being too suspect, because they think of you as just one of them, and not as an outsider. A noble is more likely to brag about securing the McGuffin you are after to one of their peers than they are the common adventuring lot.
