In my current TOA campaign my players have made the following characters: Indiana Jones (rogue), Wonder Woman (fighter), and Lady Grantham from Downton Abby (bard). We also have a warforged artificer inspired after one of my players watched west world
I've been toying with builds to make an expy of Inspector Tequila from John Woo's Hard Boiled, complete with set pieces of sliding down banisters, dual hand crossbows, shooting from a cart rolling through a room, back-to-back machismo, one-liners, shootdodging over/into cover, and fights in temples with doves flying everywhere. Haven't settled on a race/class yet. Could also maybe do something with an artificer.
I tried to play Alphonse... (Full Metal Alchemist) Unfortunately my group didn't like the "one dang weak-point" idea, a lot. had to play a pre-gen instead :(

Sometimes the way to win the other players over can be difficult!
I was building a druid because I don't have any, and I thought 'Hey, I'll make him a Water Genasi to complement my ex-pirate Paladin, they'll have history...'
I'm running a series of one-shots where everyone plays as different heroines/princesses from Disney movies... So I made them all as characters, so the night of each one-shot they just pick up the character they want. I did them all published material, no homebrew, and they all took feat at level 4 instead of ASI for flavour, and got a couple of magical items that helped to complete them while keeping them in-line power-wise with one another. Races were chosen in some places for best fit, and in other places for the abilities that better replicate the character. They were all statted to level 5 for the first set of one-shots, and we're going to slowly try them out at different, interesting levels.
In no particular order:
Ariel (The Little Mermaid) - Triton Rogue (Thief), Entertainer Background, Mobile feat
Jasmine (Aladdin) - Tabaxi (tiger patterned, as a callback to Rajah) Monk (Kensei) Noble Background, Keen Mind feat
I've had a few characters based on TV and movie characters. I had a halfling bard who looked like Samwise Gamgee (it was my first time playing a halfling and LOTR had come out) but I modeled him a little bit off David Bowie and Labyrinth.
I also had a Harper Agent named Roland Hieronious. I named him after Roland from the Dark Tower series and modeled his look and mannerisms based on Ron Weasley.
Finally I had an elven fighter based on Chris Jericho circa 2005. He had long, blond hair and was a jerk and would taunt most of his opponents.

I have an intelligence of six, I know what I'm doing.
I've recently made a number of characters from different media, but I haven't played any of them, yet. *All characters stats used Standard Array.)
Ichigo/Itchy Nose (Bleach) - Half Orc Sorcerer specializing in Shadow Magic who fights with a long sword and likes the Booming Blade cantrip. Half Orc was chosen to represent that he's half Human and half Soul Reaper (didn't go half elf or Tiefling because I wanted the strength and the ability to come back from the dead) and Shadow Magic was chosen to represent that he was affected by Hollows.
All of the Strawhat Pirates from One Piece:
Luffy/Loopy - A Human Berserker Barbarian with the Pirate background who fights with a Quarterstaff and a Whip (to substitute for stretching) and has the Tavern Brawler feat to up his unarmed strikes (1d4+3 damage). Human was chosen because Luffy excels in all attributes except intelligence (super strong, incredibly acrobatic with quick reflexes, rubber body can take huge amounts of damage, is highly sensitive to attacks, and is able to both lead and inspire people without really trying), and I needed the plus 1 to all attributes to represent that.
Zoro/Zero - A Goliath Battle Master Fighter with the Urban Bounty Hunter background. He has Two Weapon Fighting style so both Longswords get the ability modifier and he has the Dual Wielder feat so his weapons don't have to be light. Goliath was chosen so that the Stone's Endurance would represent his ability to survive massive damage. Battle Master lets him knock enemies away, send attacks flying outside of normal melee range, and attack multiple enemies at one time.
Sanji/Sonny J - A High Elf Noble who has studied the Way of the four Elements Monk style so that his Unarmed Strikes can cause fire damage and knock enemies away. He also has the Fey Teleportation Feat to make up for his sudden bursts of speed and High Elf was chosen for Green Flame Blade (fire damage can hit more than one enemy).
Nami/Mani - A Forest Gnome Urchin who became an Evocation focused Wizard. Forest Gnome for Int (Spellcasting) and Dex (Thieves' Tools). Urchin background because she was an orphan and is a navigator (city instead of ocean unfortunately). Evocation Wizard because her character is shown to learn how to use weather powers, particularly wind, cold, and lightning. Wizards can also use quarterstaffs which is Nami's weapon of choice, and Gnomes get access to the Fade Away feat which allows her to turn invisible if damaged (representing her desire to avoid combat and her ability to hide using various means including weather magic).
Usopp/Full Stop - A Deep Gnome Clan Crafter Arcane Trickster. Similar to Nami, Usopp tries to avoid fighting, but when he does, he specializes in ranged attacks. That is manifested in the combination of Rogue Sneak Attack, Shortbow, and Sharpshooter feat. Clan Crafter is supposed to substitute respect for Giants for respect for Dwarves since Giants are basically just monsters in dnd; it also represents his ability to invent stuff. His magic is basically used for trickery which is another way Usopp fights.
Chopper/Topper - A Circle of the Moon Druid (for nature and animal transformations) Minotaur (to represent Chopper's "human" form and the fact that he's originally a reindeer) with the Hermit background (to say he's learned something special about medicine). His spells are focused on healing/restoration and dealing with animals. Tavern Brawler feat for unarmed strikes.
Nico Robin/Nica Rosalyn - A Dispater Tiefling (for charisma, dex, the ability to help her hide from pursuers, and the Devil's Child nickname), who was trained as an Archaeologist (because the original character was), made a pact with an Archfey (because people are either intimidated by her reputation or charmed by her beauty), and has received the Pact of the Tome. Her spells are all about hiding/avoiding people/damage, holding people, or making hands that do stuff (or spells that could be described as hands doing stuff). War Caster feat because she fights mostly with powers instead of physical abilities.
Franky/Clanky - A Warforged (Cyborg) Gunsmith Artificer with a Guild Artisan background (ability to make various weapons with different attacks as well as beings a ships craftsman). I chose the Crossbow Expert feat instead of Sharpshooter feat because Franky tends to shoot people he's in melee combat with. All the Artificer abilities and magic, along with the Guild Artisan abilities, represent Franky's ability to build and fix so much stuff, especially considering his Colapunk technology.
Brook/Broken - A Human College of Swords Bard (musician who can sword fight) who died and came back to life as a Revenant (for Con, Dex, and Cha). He, of course, has the Entertainer background. He has the Mobile feat to represent Brook's speed and ability to attack enemies without them realizing it. His spells are enchantment and illusion focused.
Jinbei/Jumbo - A Triton (fish man) who worked as part of the City Watch (Royal Guard) while also studying the Way of the Four Elements (Fishman Karate). As a guard, Jinbei could use a Trident, but since Monk weapons are mostly Simple melee weapons, I gave him a Spear (it has the exact same stats/abilities) as well as the Spear Mastery feat.
I also made Eve Dallas (Dawn Austin) and Roarke (Rodrick) from the J.D. Robb "In Death" novels (a Zariel tielfling Oath of Vengeance Paladin Investigator married to a Tabaxi Charlatan/Thief), Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden (Lewis Gandalf Dumbledore Thompson) from Jim Butcher's Dresden Files (a Fire Genasi Evocation Wizard who trained as an Investigator), and Gin Blanco (Tequila White) from Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin novels (a High Elf with a Criminal background who grew into an Inquisitive Rogue that multiclassed into Wizard).
I've also done a number of the Crystal Gems from Steven Universe, but won't go into it at this time.

Then I realized I was building AquaMan.
Never characters, but an NPC in my homebrew world is based pretty heavily on Leslie Knope from Parks and Rec.
I would want to make a She-Ra character but I can't decide if she should be a paladin or an Eldritch knight.
I twice played the 10th Doctor, once in a 3.5 game, and once in a 4e game as a wizard multi-classed into artificer.

I’ve got a warlock kicking around who is heavily based off of Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail. Erza is the Archfey they have as a patron.

I DM and will be doing a couple one shots, and my DM wants to run some as well, so I'll get to play with them, too. Should be fun!
Quite the project. I applaud your efforts and approve. Never enough Disney. Ever.

I hope to jump into the game with both feet.
I based my first ever d&d character of Aragorn.
Figured that since he was 80 in the movies i made him half elf ranger and he was buff as f :p. Even managed to get a mithril sword.
