I sculpt minis. I start with an armature of wire, overlay that with a rough form of green stuff, then use grey polymer clay over that for the actual sculpture. Works pretty well for me. It's kind of a safety net because I can't work fast enough to sculpt with green stuff before it gets too hard. I only have a couple hours here and there so one sculpture often takes me several days as I grab an hour or so here and there. And the green stuff makes a good base for the plain polymer clay to stick too (since it can't stick to the wire).
yeah i picked up an awesome ogre mini for body size and i think im gonna just sculpt the head which is alot easier then doing the whole thing and i will take your tips too heart and try my best and post pics when im done

Anybody want to take the task of 3d printing a loxodon cleric for me with a maul? I'm thinking trying to sculpt one out of clay but I got really lazy
Clay would be an incredibly difficult medium to work with when sculpting a mini.
Go pick up some greenstuff. If you're a little less lazy, just buy a mini that is close to what you want to sculpt the extra bits you want.
