So we are doing Waterdeep Dragon Heist and its alot of fun. We found a great DM and we just finished our third session and just leveled up. Problem we are having is we keep dying. spoilers for chapter 1 ahead.
Put your spoiler here. I watched the promo vids for WDH and it made it seem like it was going to be very social encounter heavy like Oceans 11 in DnD. Well because of this assumption I advised our group that we make our team of 4 accordingly.
We are lvl1 WARLOCK, BARD, ROGUE, FIGHTER
Well there was a huge fight in the bar we started in and ... We all got KOed
Then we were exploring a warehouse and got ambushed by Kenku and we all were KOed, 1 and 2 shotted. The Rogue ran away.
THEN we were smart and tricked the kenku into coming outside and they got smashed by the golem our DM agreed to let us rent from Durnan since we were scared to die again.
then we won the next few fights but three of my team mates were ONE SHOTTED by the Apprentice Wizard Orc when he used Burning Hands on all of em for 15 dmg. This is including an NPC our DM made to help us. Then our Goliath Fighter was dropped by the enemy Intellect Devourer.
So is something wrong? The reviews said that this is a good module for new players & I am kinda new to DnD.
I am just wondering why does it have us fight guys that can do 15 dmg and kill my 8 hp guy in 1 shot as soon as we enter a room at lvl 1? Shouldn't we be fighting stuff that hits for like 4 dmg like I do? I know there are more of us but we are getting owned over and over. Should we re-roll a bunch of combat types for WDH? Does it get easier after we lvl up? We should all be dead right now our DM is just fudging left and right to save our asses.
Tavern Brawl: This brawl is meant to introduce you to the tension in Waterdeep between two factions. The fight should have been almost over by the time the party get involved.
Kenku fight: I can see this fight going badly. Each Kenku has +5 to hit with a 6 damage average. This will 1-2 shot a normal lvl 1 PC if they hit.
Boss fight: Did your DM even have you all roll for a saving throw when he used burning hands? I find it hard to believe that 3 PCs rolled less than an 10/12 on a DEX/INT SAVE. (Depending on how your DM read the rules, he could have used either).
I honestly think your DM is being a jerk or just simply doesn't know how to read the whole chapter before plunging in (or isn't giving you all enough hints/help when it comes to non-combat solutions). These encounters should not have been tough. However, your party should be playing a bit smarter at level 1, or you might be a bit unbalanced in your team build. Chapter 1 is a bit combat heavy, but it'll be better here soon. The rest of the campaign is mainly role play, and when it isn't, you can be sure to find a diplomatic/smart way to avoid combat.
They all failed their saving throws so that was true. I just feel bad because I told them that it would be very little combat and we've all died so much. I know that we are not very good at our characters yet but it's hard to get better when we're dead during the whole battle so we don't have the chance to experiment and learn how to use our abilities properly at this rate it's going to take us twice the time. At least we're level 2 now and got a little bit more HP I hope things do lighten up or else I'll have to roll a tank and run 2 characters.

Golden Age
It's because you can do the same thing =) Burning Hands is a lvl 1 spell.
"Sooner or later, your Players are going to smash your railroad into a sandbox."

"real life is a super high CR."

"............anybody got any potatoes? We could drop a potato in each hole an' see which ones get viciously mauled by horrible monsters?"

Let me run through this scenario by scenario.

Golden Age
Yikes! You all could just have been very unlucky.
If you all are going back into the Xanathar guild hideout in the sewers, try asking Renear Neverember to accompany you all.
