The Party was searching through the Old Xoblob Shop in Waterdeep and I had them roll on the "Trinkets" table in the Player's Handbook. The Barbarian ended up finding a Purple Egg near the back of the estranged place, and buying it from the Svirfneblin Shopkeeper.
My first idea was having it hatch as a Purple Dragon Wyrmling, but i'm thinking it could be something more interesting...
The Dragonborn of the party used his firebreath on it and it had no effect, though the egg twitched briefly. Now, after keeping it with them for a few weeks, it has doubled in size, and seems magical in nature:
I still haven't decided on what I want it to be. Its currently resting next to the lit fireplace in their base at Trollskull Manor, ready to hatch.
Dragon was my first thought too, but there's so many things from the monster manual that you could have fun with! The main question would be do you want to mess with the party where it's going to be a pain to deal with, or would it be a quirky and fun pet that could cause mischief and quests down the line?
For a more sinister thought:
Kruthik (This is my personal choice, it would be smart enough to bond with the party, but would need attention otherwise it might kill someone to feed)
Ankheg
Basilisk
Bullette
Ettercap
Hook Horror
Purple Worm
More fun:
Guardian Naga (Bit of a stretch due to lore, but sounds fun! Baby version obviously)
If you have access to content from the Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica, try giving a neat monster like a Krasis a spin. They come in three size categories and have so many mix and match adaptation options that you can create a fun beat that starts sorta cute but really grows into a problem over time. I used one in my Dragon Heist game and flavored it as some strange beast that was transported to Waterdeep from the jungles of Chult as part of a circus sideshow act.
Since the egg wasn’t damaged by fire, make it something that’s either resistant to fire damage or immune to fire damage. Maybe a Lava Child or a Salamander that the party can raise as an ally? Both of them are born from eggs and they’re immune to fire.
Mabye it could be a whole new other type of monster. I was guessing it could be some kind of othreworldly black or purple dragon. Another thing is that it could be a Fire-Poison dragon or just a poison dragon.

2f. Bumping Threads and Thread Necromancy
Thread-necromancy is defined as reviving an old thread for no reason other than bumping it to the first page or offering your opinion on a discussion that concluded over 6 months previously, without offering new information. If you have nothing to add to the discussion, move on. Thread authors may reply to their thread if they have made a significant update to the original post.
We do not auto lock threads so that new information can be added to an older topic without needing to start a new thread.

What do you guys think it should be?

For something weird you could go a more reptilian version of a Grung, or even a group of them, maybe even kobolds.
Something more powerful could be a Hydra.
Maybe a Dradonborn Hatchling.
Though all in all my suggestion would be to make something weird and unique, even if initially it seems as though it is some core monster/critter.

I backed them and there are a lot of cool examples how to hatch, breed and control monsters and the pictures are adorable!
Make it hatch into a perfect 1/8 size replica of one of the players.
