My favorite tends to be whomever I am currently playing, which is an aasimar paladin. Cianan Odhran, third son of a powerful noble family who was given over to religious service and has taken the mantle of paladin.
The game is set in the Diablo videogame universe, so the character is played as a human. He's a paladin of the Zakarum faith, and his messenger is an angelic being that sees Cianan as a pawn in his machinations against demonic forces. Their relationship is almost more along the lines of a warlock and its patron, which I may be dipping a level into for various reasons.
His personal, angel-granted quest is to uncover those mortals that have been corrupted by demons by way of cursed gold coins (borrowed from Dresden Files there). I left a potential avenue for the DM to pull a fast one on me, and asked that the angelic messenger first approached me when I had found a gold coin of the same make.
Aside from him, one character I had a lot of sheer enjoyment out of was Zabrassi, a tabaxi rogue whose Dex of 11 was his highest stat. It was an Adventurers League series of games, and it was a fun challenge finding ways to mechanically keep him relevant. In the end, he was actually one of the PCs that got the most done, and my fellow players would occasionally skip their own spotlights to keep it on Zabrassi.
Sea Elf Eldritch Knight Fighter Fathomless Warlock Named Trixie who thinks she is a cleric of deep Sashelas after being manipulated by Uk'otoa who is insane and best freinds with a wizard kobold named Bliz(another player) and Fighter/wizard goblin named Bliss(also another player) she also has a famliar who is an Otter named Cookies and pet kitten named Cream. the game is set in Matt Mercer's Xhorhas Setting
Dragonheart - mostly because it is me playing me! When I first started playing (back in ‘79) I was too much of a begging player and begging DM and annoyed my DM with rules lawyering so he dumped me at the back of the party of orcs attacking the characters expecting to kill me off. Then he realized his mistake as I worked out as a L3 monk/L3 ranger switch class human and was able to survive and thrive. He worked up to L17 as a ranger, killed Lolth in the Demonweb pits and took up psionics and then magic before retiring to deity status in my own campaign.
A friend ran a campaign which was effectively a Groundhog Day, at the same time every night everyone would die and then wake up the same time that morning. The PCs seemed to be the only characters with memories of every reset and if we died we where resurrected at the next reset period. We had to work out why the reset was happening and find ways to not be reset allowing us to keep equipment reset to reset.
My character was a wizard who proclaimed to be the best student at his school but really wasn’t. I started lawful good.
Over the course of the campaign (level 1-15) My character slowly became less lawful and good. Driven by a desire to learn and understand, a realisation that death would itself be a lesson I could learn I started putting the party in danger pushing for harder and harder fights. Then, I realised the NPCs reset every day, no recollection of anything. So I started to put them in danger, experiment. The final step to becoming lawful evil was when I cast sleep on a pregnant women, and tried seeing how her baby looked on the inside.
This shift took almost 18 months of real time, it was slow and steady and happened without the other players realising. Finally we realised how to break the curse, at that point my character, obsessed with wanting to learn even more, obsessed with ensuring my mortality wouldn’t stop my lessons, decided to actively stop the party and I became one of the bbegs
My favorite character was a Variant Aasimar that I played whilst being the DM; I know that usually DMs do not play their own characters in their campaign; but, my party was... to put it nicely slow as heck when it came to puzzles, or literally anything, even including the things they want to do. I tried to to make it very simple, on one of the puzzles all they had to do was figure out what 1+1 was, now these are 8th graders, so they should know that. It was written right on the door. Anyway, back to the character, he was a Lvl. 10 blood hunter, with 3 levels in Bard, and 3 levels in fighter, I decided to name him "The Cruel One", because his alignment was Lawful Evil. He had a haunted one background with his faith literally being Dungeon Master as a joke because he was being played by the DM. Anyway he had a +3 Hand Crossbow, a +7 Holy Avenger Rapier, and a +7 Javelin Of Lightning. I even gave him a second phase, (so that he wouldn't die when my party eventually decided to attempt to kill him before the plot turning point) in which all his stats were tripled, and he was always at advantage (except for anything to do with charisma), but his HP was only 1/4 of what it usually would be. When they tried to kill him, he actually ended up seducing the entire party, despite him having disadvantage. My party kinda forced me to make him roll for pull-out, he now pays child support to the only female character, played by my friend. When they had made it to the "BBEG" they had realized that the "BBEG" was not the actual BBEG of the campaign, and once they defeated a fake, I had them take a long rest to recover from that battle. While that was happening I had The Cruel One go to his evil castle that the party was trying to save the princess from (this was their 1st campaign so I themed it off of something they know). When the party woke up, he was nowhere to be found. They rolled perception checks, and somehow using their own dice, rolled all nat 1s. They ended up thinking a tiny pebble was my character. Once they got close to the castle, I had my character return to them, and explain that he went to get some food (which was a lie, but they didn't know that). Once they walked inside, all of the party except my character was knocked out. Once they awoke, The Cruel One gave a long evil monologue, that I do not remember, as this happened a while ago. They were shocked at his betrayal, and were disappointed at this, as they thought he had changed, and became good like some children's' TV show character. He gave them a choice, fight him for their freedom, or join his army and takeover the everything in the name of the Dungeon Master. They decided to fight; really hard boss battle ensues. They kill him, but he just Ascends (his 2nd phase). Even harder boss battle ensues; the party is at 1 HP, with The Cruel One at 5 HP. The barbarian of the party, decides to throw the bard at The Cruel One, killing both the bard, and The Cruel One. Nat 20. The bard flies past The Cruel One, and when he is near The Cruel One's ear, whispers, "You suck", and The cruel One falls over on his knees, sobbing for minutes, as his heart stops beating. The party is ecstatic, except for one, the rouge, the rouge was actually crying, as The Cruel One, for as evil as he was, was like the father that the rouge never had (ye the rouge was doing a no-parents backstory). The campaign ends. The rouge goes on to be a better person, no longer stealing, but giving. The End.
My favorite character would have to be Thum’par a haregon rogue/cleric he was my character for my first longterm campaign I originally was just gonna do straight rogue but then we had a player death and our group didn’t have a proper healer( we had a paladin but that was it) so I used that as chance for character development where the loss of a comrade help my character get closer to his patron( tymora) where he began to develop clerical abilities
What is your most favorite character you've ever played and why? I am interested to hear everyone's experiences.
I have several from different eras, and game editions.
1997 Gilbert Alfhiem - Elf Psion (AD&D The Complete Psionics Handbook) = I based him on the me at that time, so a bit of a self insert. (You will see a lot of this in my reply and my list, as each of my favorites had me exploring a part of myself.) Note he died badly by being sent to the Negative Energy Plane.
1999 (Nameless Female Winged Elf) Wizard - Premade Character for one session, was still a Newb D&D Player, and got handed a character who could fly and cast fireball. Insert party kill fireball meme. - Why I liked her, 1st Female Character never thought I was allowed to play as female.
2002 (I'm bad with names wont repeat the bad name, but it was a double entendre and I didn't even notice until last session because I'm dense on sexuality) Female Greyhawk Valley Elf War-wizard (The Complete Book of Elves Fighter-Wizard Kit Class) She was evil aligned, in an all evil party, the Party had wiped to a swam of succubus, and for my last spell I used a magic missile and killed the boss. She drank the immortality elixir and became a Succubus. That was when I found out what I had been saying for a year. Coca~Cola you let me down.
Skip a few years, I renamed my Elf War-Wizard, played a few unimpressive D&D 3e games, ended up as a DM during 4th... got tales to tell about those games. But none with my characters.
Finally covid shutdown, others want to DM...
Remade Gilbert as Gail Alfhiem Shardar-Kai Cleric of the Raven Queen, she was remade by the Raven Queen as her soul was stuck in the Negative Energy Plane but the Shadowfell is right next to that. Makes for a Good Backstory, had a few fun sessions, sadly the person DMing that decided not to DM anymore.
But the most fun character I made, was Bhuem KaBhuem a Rock Gnome Artificer (Her token is my current avatar) . Sadly the guy DMing the game ran out of steam at the mid point in the campaign. So she is stuck never to be played again, and I'm stuck DMing again. Never again able to make cool characters with cool stories.
My most cherished character in DnD has to be Thalion, the Elven Ranger. There's something about Thalion that just resonates with me. He's not your typical hero. He's a bit of a loner, a wanderer with a deep connection to the natural world. His backstory is rich with lore – a lone survivor of a decimated woodland realm, he roams the lands, seeking to restore balance and harmony. He speaks seldom, but when he does, his words carry the weight of the ancient forests he calls home.
Was my first time playing a bard since 3.5, so the power spike and spell variety in 5e was staggering and addicting. No longer was I a haste/lingering song battery. I could counterspell, silvery barbs, cutting words, greater invis, legend lore, fireball, teleport, bigby's hand, inspiration bonus actions, tiny hut, ritual cast ... maybe some of these things were standard run-of-the-mill benefits to 5e spellcasters, but the amount of support and utility I offered my party was deliriously fun.
Backstory tldr ended up with her being the daughter of an Eilistraeen-esque bard and an immortal-in-disguise, sending her on a journey of discovering the truth about her lineage and how to carry on their legacy. Ended up seeking out a vestige once owned by her father and founding a bardic college in honor of her mother. Succeeded on an unlikely strength check to push a big bad off a cliff, counterspelled a finger of death, and almost killed herself by gambling with a cursed tome that traded attribute points for another.
She, uh, did, however, burn down a great many buildings and ships by accident through collateral damage fireballs.
For me it was my necromancer wizard, Ceril Vassen The partys paladin got sick of his "wicked ways" and convinced 4 other PC's that i was a evil that needed to be purged, the campaign ended in a 5v3+48
Team Paladin: Paladin, Fighter, Bard, Cleric ,and Ranger Team Wizard: Wizard, Warlock, Rouge, and 48 undead
The battle happened in a cave
it was a epic showdown, the ranger was the first to fall after being worn down by many arrow shots from my skeletons and finished off by a eldric blast from the warlock, the next to fall was the warlock who died from the bard insulting his mother, the paladin went down but rolled a nat 20 on his first death save, then the fighter went down after being greatly damaged by a sneak attack and finished off by a skeleton with a nat 20 arrow shot to the head, next to fall was the bard because he rushed in to try to get me but he was body slamed by a skeleton and fell into a deeper part of the cave and was lost
By this point i had lost 15 undead and the Rouge was nearly dead, i had not taken a single hit yet The paladin and cleric were mostly full hp because they were both tanky af
it just turned into a who can deal the most damage fight after that, the rouge got a good hit off on the cleric but was then struck down by the paladin, the rouge passed his death saves and i told him to run off(he was on 1 hp) he ran but the cleric casted guiding bolt and he fell to the ground, my skeletons finished off the cleric and then it turned into a 1v1 between me and the paladin
At this point i had only 12 undead left and i was full health and the paladin only had lost 17 hit points, however he was out of divine smites arrows flew and swords clashed, the paladin got to 7 hit points an i only had 4 undead left
he charged me hoping to finish it all and got a good hit on me and then i pulled out something i hadn't used for a long time, a wand of magic missiles that the paladin helped me buy when i was 35 gold short, i said "goodbye old friend" and struck him down
And later the bard did a little side campaign to see if his bard survived and got out of the caverns, he did and the next campaign was led by a old scar covered bard who gathered a party to hunt down a lich who killed his friend's
my necromancer rose the paladin as a death knight to serve him and the rouge became a home brewed shadow undead and they served as mini bosses in the campaign(the cleric, fighter, and warlock were also mini bosses but they were not memorable because they went down in one or two rounds and i did not raise the ranger as a boss because rangers suck(nah jk i did, he was just never killed during that campaign because we forgot about him))

This is hilarious! Thanks for the share! But... No turn undead?!
Probably my first character. A orc paladin named Bumph. She was an oath of the ancients paladin and had during our first quest she saved a group of owlbear cubs from a bugbear Poacher one of which became an animal companion with beast master ranger multiclass. Ik its was mad as all get out and definitely sucked but she was so fun and i will always love my little owlbear Stinker.
A more recent character I've had a ton of fun playing circus Strongman, Tiefling Fighter using the unarmed fighting style and grapple.
I never had a "favorite" per se, but until recently I have always played a Fighter. Simiply because he is the most simple class. His only job is to kill things and take as little damage doing it as possible.
I only recently changed to the Monk, then WotC ended up nerfing a bunch of the abilities (eg Stun, Vibrating Palm). But I think the Shadow Monk (or whatever it's called in UA8) might become my favorite once the rules are finalized and I can play it. 🤷🏿♂️

Unfortunately for the cleric it was a rather big cave and i was able to spread out my skeletons and use their bows, they were able to get a few of my skeletons with it however they were very busy trying to keep the rest of the party alive, i tryed to find the map in my screen shots but i may have accidentally deleted it, i tryed to keep my skeletons and me far away from the cleric, i used the large gaps in the floor to help keep them away, trust me, turn undead was the most scary thing for me, thats what caused me to lose a good bit of my skeletons.
EDIT: Basicly i played ring around the rosy with a army of skeletons while a cleric chased us

it was a epic showdown, the ranger was the first to fall after being worn down by many arrow shots from my skeletons and finished off by a eldric blast from the warlock, the next to fall was the warlock who died from the bard insulting his mother, the paladin went down but rolled a nat 20 on his first death save, then the fighter went down after being greatly damaged by a sneak attack and finished off by a skeleton with a nat 20 arrow shot to the head, next to fall was the bard because he rushed in to try to get me but he was body slamed by a skeleton and fell into a deeper part of the cave and was lost
By this point i had lost 15 undead and the Rouge was nearly dead, i had not taken a single hit yet
The paladin and cleric were mostly full hp because they were both tanky af
it just turned into a who can deal the most damage fight after that,
the rouge got a good hit off on the cleric but was then struck down by the paladin, the rouge passed his death saves and i told him to run off(he was on 1 hp) he ran but the cleric casted guiding bolt and he fell to the ground, my skeletons finished off the cleric and then it turned into a 1v1 between me and the paladin
At this point i had only 12 undead left and i was full health and the paladin only had lost 17 hit points, however he was out of divine smites
arrows flew and swords clashed, the paladin got to 7 hit points an i only had 4 undead left
he charged me hoping to finish it all and got a good hit on me and then i pulled out something i hadn't used for a long time, a wand of magic missiles that the paladin helped me buy when i was 35 gold short, i said "goodbye old friend" and struck him down
And later the bard did a little side campaign to see if his bard survived and got out of the caverns, he did and the next campaign was led by a old scar covered bard who gathered a party to hunt down a lich who killed his friend's
my necromancer rose the paladin as a death knight to serve him and the rouge became a home brewed shadow undead and they served as mini bosses in the campaign(the cleric, fighter, and warlock were also mini bosses but they were not memorable because they went down in one or two rounds and i did not raise the ranger as a boss because rangers suck(nah jk i did, he was just never killed during that campaign because we forgot about him))
The most fun I've had playing was Dragonheart.
Mini Militia App Lock
Me personally my fav character was a warforged fight, that is still alive to this day. He was really good for just killing hordes and being a sheild
