I am new to d&d and have the core rules books for the 3rd edition, my question is.... can I use 5th edition scenarios and most of the character creation rules to start playing and building my player?
A little specificity missing. I think what your asking is if such things as the ability score generations, equipment selection, and starting gold can be used in 3rd edition; and also if 5th edition campaigns and such can be used in 3rd edition. Or maybe visa-versa. If so the answer is, to some extent. 3rd edition is the closest one to 5th edition.
Most of the character generation rules can be used between 3rd and 5th edition. There are some differences that can cause problems, 3rd edition uses skill points and Base Attack Bonus, 5th edition uses proficiency bonus. In 3rd edition, feats are a required rather than optional rule and more common but less powerful. And some other things.
As for scenarios, only at low levels. 3rd edition's numbers go up quicker and have a higher cap, but it also has less features. It wouldn't be too hard to convert, but you need to be experienced with both editions to do so properly.
Your just starting out, so I see two routes for you. One, use the 3rd edition books you have. Or two, use the free basic rules for 5th edition that is here and other places. Though 3rd edition has some unique and interesting things in it, 5th edition is more newbie friendly and you can use the character creator on this website. If you have experienced friends to play with, ask them to help you learn. If you don't you can try looking at the boards to find a Discord campaign. The best starting campaign for a newbie in 5th edition is "Lost Mines of Phandelver", so look out for one's that have that or are asking for newbies.
If you are trying to limit your outlay for the game, I know I was when one of my gaming groups verily demanded that the next system be Pathfinder 1e, you can do try one or both of my suggestions. The first is to us the Free Basic Rules set as mentioned here and you are amenable to using and supplement with modules and campaign ideas you can find online and at places like the DMsguild at DriveThruRPg.com. The second option is to get just the monster manual for 5e and use the Basic Rules from online to begin your game. Both ways will get you maximum output for minimum cost.
