I came late to the D&D Party and I love D&D Beyond. I have no ties to Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds, but I discovered Foundry VTT, a virtual tabletop currently in development, and being very open in nature it instantly triggered my inner nerd. So I started coding. I am actually coding more than I am playing, which is sometimes a bit frustrating, but other times very rewarding.
Who are you again?
I am Sebastian, ~40y/o from Germany. In my free time I develop tools and modules (that are addons to Foundry VTT, the naming is a bit unfortunate for D&D folks) for Foundry VTT. That includes foremost the integration modules for D&D Beyond and the Tokenizer, an in-game token editor.
Okay, and what does this... extension do?
It brings your content you licensed here into your Foundry VTT game. This includes an actor for your players, and monsters/spells for you as a dungeon master. On the fly, within seconds.
It integrates well into the monster sheets to enable rolling in a very tight way, i.e. it executes the same way as rolling within Foundry VTT, enabling other mod authors to react on your actions
"Is that it? This is... disappointing." I am kind of sorry to have wasted your time :-/
What's the plan?
I will develop this package further, as I see fit. I am looking forward to the initiative tracker and the development of the encounter builder, I can see great synergies between those new features and Foundry. Basically, if I see a match to bring both worlds, D&D Beyond and Foundry tighter together, in that direction I will go.
Does it cost anything? No, it doesn't. I am running a Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/vttassets), and there are formidable folks that are supporting the development of these modules. As I see it, it is an instrument to see if I am going into the right direction. If people stop supporting, I will stop developing for the community, but will focus on tools that I want to use and probably won't polish the gems until they shine the way they shine right now. Right now, pre-release stuff is patreon only, but I do plan to make it available for everyone in the long run
If you already have Foundry VTT, it's a great time to have a look at the current state of the module, as it is available for everyone during the holidays, even as a pre-release software!
Hello SolFolango. I just recently discovered Foundry VTT and along with it your wonderful looking addon. I am trying to install the chrome extension and having difficulty. When I go to "Load Unpacked" and browse to '...\AppData\Local\FoundryVTT\Data\modules\vtta-dndbeyond' there is no folder for _extension\root to be found. Am I missing something? I have installed the add-on module in FVTT.
The extension is included in the latest release channel, which is available for my Patreons. In the "Latest" release channel, the ability to import characters was included already, development of the extension was still in the works and not available.
Since this post, development went very smooth and 1.0.10 was released today. I created a 1h video that provides an overview of Foundry VTT as a kind of "New Users Guide", including the setup and therefore showcasing of the extension and it's companion module. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/GFE7b4FvZGo?t=2353 (timestamped to the part where we actually import monsters from D&D Beyond into our world). You will find a Table of Contents with quick links to get to the things that might interest you.
Thanks for supporting me in the meantime, TechnoCat, it's appreciated <3
Hi ! Just bought FoundryVTT and trying right now your extension, it seems amazing.
Just two little question : I can"t import all the monsters, have you an idea why ? Is there any way to create an account to your website without using a google adress ?
Thanks in advance, and keep the good work, it's amazing !
Hi there! Unfortunately, a google mail adress is the only way forward - that seems a non-issue for most users yet, and it makes my life easier when logging in into the extension. Regarding imports: Everything besides non-SRD monsters is absolutely free (characters, monsters, items, spells) to import, only non-SRD-Monsters require an active Patreon pledge right now. Support has been amazing, and I could open up step by step, but that's the current development :)
Could someone write the process down? I'm trying to watch the video but I can't follow. I must be missing something, and I imagine it's way more simple a process than a 30+ minute video entails. I see Sebastian import a Red Dragon to Foundry but that's not working for me. I get a message "No Foundry Tab connected. Refresh or open Foundry Tab to connect." which means I must have missed something. I've opened up the webpage, have Foundry running with my world loaded, and still can't get the message to go away or the buttons for importing to my game to load.
Sure thing! There is a written installation guide on vttassets.com, too, but the most quickest turnaround if you are running into issues is to just check on the Discord, even with my time zone being a bit unfortunate for US users, there's always nice and helpful people around, but feel free to ping me and I will get back to you when I am available: https://discord.gg/YFkqZFe
First of all, this thing is ducking amazing! Second of all, I have a question. Maybe it´s already been answered, but I couldn´t find anything about it. Is it possible, or will it be possible, to bulk import all my licensed stuff (I own a legendary bundle) from DDB to foundry? I love how simple it is to just click to import, but there is a lot of stuff I want to import so it still needs a ton of clicks. Danke!
I'm at a hurdle. I've setup the three compendium directories (My Actors, My Items, My Spells) under the same folder as the "dndbeyond" and "players". When I get to the configuration step and go to choose these compendiums they don't show up, only the SRD's do (and you told us to stay away from those). I've logged out and back in, but alas it won't show the directories I put in.
EDIT: Fixed. The problem was simple: I’m a bit ‘touched’ and kept thinking I had to make directories for the compendiums instead of just creating them in-game.
Yay! Good you were able to solve that on your own! I admit that I am not monitoring the dndbeyond forums vigorously, it's way easier to hit me up on discord.
I am a fairly new DM, and I have transitioned to online gaming during the lock-down here in the Turks and Caicos Islands. I have a group of students from my school (I'm a teacher) and we have been using Roll 20.
Yesterday I discovered Foundry VTT, and I have been doing some research, which lead me here, and I am sold!
The idea of integrating DnD Beyond (which I use constantly) into VTT is amazing. Thank you for your efforts!
I am seriously considering investing in both VTT now!
That's great to hear! I would recommend to hop onto the Discord server (both the official Foundry one and mine) to find really nice, and helpful people that will help you get started. As with any new software, Foundry needs some time to learn the ropes, but the community is amazing.
I was sent some sample of Fantasy Grounds data, and it did not look super complicated (basically XML that you need to "understand"), but I am quite time limited right now with the adventure module import and the walling process that is likely gonna take a while, so I plan to focus on D&D Beyond as the fantastic resource it really is.
What's the latest on being able to import adventures into TheFoundry throughthe integration module? I am running Curse of Strahd online, and I would love to add it to The Foundry through this module.
I'm running into a program with importing character data into Foundry VTT from DnDbyond using your extension. When I add the suffix /json to my character sheet, it just says the page was not found. Which I gather is not the correct thing to happen. What am I doing wrong?

Want to learn more about
... Foundry VTT: https://www.foundryvtt.com
... vtta-dndbeyond: https://www.vttassets.com/asset/vtta-dndbeyond, or join the discord, or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkMbEA68dsU&t=1503s (the audio stutters around ~10:00, I need to update that but won't manage it before christmas, just mute and enjoy the images)
Hope to see you soon on the discord or here! Have a great holiday, enjoy your time with your loved ones and take care of yourself!

Gonna have to play with this later! I hadn't heard of Foundry VTT either so I'll need to check both of these out. Thanks for sharing!
Full of rice, beans, and bad ideas.
Not to sound like a fanboy (I am!), but Foundry really is something you could check out if your game sessions depend on internet play.

Thanks so much for this. Probably unlikely, but is there a way to import stuff that I've purchased from Fantasy Grounds? Modules and such?

Thanks for all of your hard work, @SolFolango!
Hey SolFolango,
I'm running into a program with importing character data into Foundry VTT from DnDbyond using your extension. When I add the suffix /json to my character sheet, it just says the page was not found. Which I gather is not the correct thing to happen. What am I doing wrong?
That method doesn't work anymore. Read the help text in the mod when you click the "B" button and it will explain what to do.
WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
