I agree with Pocket about Astral. They made some very bad decisions with data storage. Other VTTs have been smarter about it.
On the other hand, I can actually get Astral to work. My problem with first FG and now Foundry is, you have to open ports in your router to allow external connections and modify the firewall, and even though I have done that (following instructions for my router), no connections are being allowed. It does me no good to have a great UI and functional product for myself as DM, that none of my players can connect to.
I am going to keep thrashing a little bit with Foundry but there is a limit to how much time I want to sink into tech issues rather than actually DMing. Which at least Astral lets me do.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
Well I think I have managed to expose Foundry to the outside. There was a place within the OS that had it blocked somehow.
I have not had another person test it so my ability to confirm this is limited. But it looks like it might, perhaps, be working. Not to figure the whole thing out...

I have changed over to Foundry vtt with the release and must say it is phenomenal, so much better than roll20 and it also is open source. The community has cranked out modules that add so many features and quality of life stuff. big plus, you can host it from your own machine or host it online and players needn’t buy or install anything. You just give them a link and they join.

Is there any similar Beyond20 type mechanic (Roll20) for Foundry VTT?
Currently using beyond20 as a base with roll20 as the VTT and beyond20 as the bridge & "D&D custom DM Screen" for management.
Ideally, a VTT has the features of roll20 but with the visual interface and simplicity of 3DVTT is an ideal setup. Waiting for either Roll20 to implement a native 3D stage/tabletop in the vein of 3DVTT, OR for 3DVTT to adopt the same integrations with DndBeyond that Roll20 has. In a perfect world though, Dndbeyond would offer all of this here as a one stop shop.

Yes.
You can actually fully import whole DDB characters into Foundry if you want. I just tested this with a friend. It even brought in nearly all of his custom homebrew subclass features (there were a few text glitches in the descriptions but all the mechanical stuff came in correctly).
You can also import all the monsters, if you subscribe to the modder's Patreon. But I can't speak for that... I have only been messing around with Foundry for one day and not there yet.

I have never run on VTT It's really confusing and way too time-consuming for me to figure out, With everything else I have to plan out. and look up I don't have the time or patience. Now if I were to find a free one that is simply dragging and click without dealing with resizing or layers, or buying anything then maybe. What I've been doing is just using my dry erase map and minis taking a picture of it and sending it to my players, while we use facebook's new video chat room as Discord kept crashing and giving us audio issues.
I use Fantasy Grounds, just recently started using Foundry and love it, Tabletop Simulator for another group and Roll20 here and there but less and less. They all have their pros and cons. I favor FG but so far really like Foundry, Tabletop Simulator is fun and easy once you get a hang of it and Roll20 is ok for what it is I guess but never been a huge fan.
What I would LOVE to see is DnDBeyond to come out with a full fledged VTT. I already buy all my stuff here and it would be nice to not have to find round about ways to use my already bought content on another platform. I have bought every single rule and adventure book since I played a lot in person until everything that has gone on and I have bought a ton of stuff on DnDBeyond. The easiest way to use each platform is to buy the material directly from them of course but it's just not feasible for me to do so 3-4 times. I am over buying the same rulebooks multiple times for each platform though I understand why it is that way, I just can't keep doing it.
If DNDBeyond will have a VTT, even something as simple as squared maps with tokens connected to the characters and monster blocks, I will be interested even if I have to pay. I really like to have everything on the same place and this site has, in my opinion, the best lay out and the best character creation/tracking out there.

I agree, if it was basic i would totally pay, but i would want a one time purchase not a subscription. I hate paying monthly for stuff.
One thing I have found very useful about the Foundry over, say, D&D Beyond, is that things like special abilities for monsters -- I can make them once as an item, and then drag-and-drop them onto any other monster, character, or NPC. No need to replicate or copy-paste text or any of that.

Our DM takes the time to set up the lighting so each of us only sees what we are supposed to see. That one thing has raised my D&D experience to another level because without the Fog of War you get information that makes combat boring. Because of the Fog of War our last combat seemed much more significant. We have a party with two humans and five dark vision characters. We were fighting in a room that had other rooms branching off and some members of the party spread out. So my character was unable to see the whole battlefield and unable to see even all the players in our party. This made things very interesting because using the players "pings" I could only tell there was sound coming from over there and over there. The bad guys eventually ran outside into the darkness of the night. We were unable to run them all down.
If you can play in a game with that extra point, you should find it to be very interesting too.
Good luck and have fun.

FYI: You can also subscribe to The Forge which does all the hosting for you and makes using Foundry VTT a matter of a few simple clicks. It's being developed by the guy who wrote the amazing Beyond20 extension and he's working really hard on making it as convenient and easy to use. It's the best way to use Foundry VTT!
Ugggg I'm so tired of hearing people say that DND Beyond isn't owned by WoTC...
You're right DndBeyond is Twitch/Amazon etc... however it's the officially licensed online resource for D&D. WoTC contracted it's creation and licensed it... As such D&D is the online "Ambassador" of D&D. They did this because they saw value in pushing the Online space with Twitch streams etc... It is in everyone's best interest to have a VTT integrated into DNDBeyond officially so that it could be seamlessly integrated into twitch streams. Right now it is a mess, and it's completely ludicrous that Beyond was ever launched without a basic VTT. As far as twitch is concerned it should have been a design requirement from day one.
It is in everyone's best interest to have a VTT integrated into DNDBeyond officially so that it could be seamlessly integrated into twitch streams.
Why is it in "everyone's" best interest to do this? Twitch streamers are in the vast, vast minority of users on this site and players of RPGs. If 0.1% of players stream on twitch I'd be surprised it's that high. 99.9% of the player base does NOT need twitch integration.
And most of us do not need DDB to be a VTT. I mean, it's fine with me if they go there -- I'll probably just keep using Foundry no matter what, because I like its UI 1,000x more than DDB's for almost every use-case. But either way, I don't stream things on twitch.
