My players are getting close to meeting the king of the nation; exciting stuff!
The way it's looking, the players are going to ask the king for a favor. He, in turn, will ask for a favor from them. If they accept, he will want them to complete a mission but only after they prove themselves in both combat and intrigue.
I've been trying to piece together a small series of "tests" for the players, thrown at them by the king to test their abilities. The combat portion is pretty straightforward; throw a couple of guards at the players, maybe an equal-level fighter for a challenge. I've been having some trouble coming up with a test for intrigue and "spy" skills, if you will. I'm always open to new ideas, so I want to see if there were some suggestions on how to go about doing the latter half? Optimally, it would be something that could happen right in the king's courtroom.
Personally I wouldn't be so forward about it. I'd have the king say he needs time to consider the request but while he thinks about it they are welcome to stay at such and such Inn. The king will make all the arrangements and won't take no as an answer to his hospitality. . Have the inn be a total setup where they can be tested without their knowledge. Throw combat at them in the form of a supposedly drunken patron maybe. Have them overhear "Important Information" that could effect the realm and see how, or if, they report it to the King. Maybe something along those lines.
