My friends are and I are gonna be doing a pirate/medieval fantasy campaign soon, and lately they have been interested in Dead by Daylight and I thought it might be interesting to play a character similar to movie serial killers (Jason, Freddy, Michael, Ghost Face), of course themed appropriately.
Ignoring the issues that come with being a serial killer PC for a moment. What would be the best class for that?
Obviously Rogue comes to mind, Assassins can be quick and unseen, but that's a little too easy, another idea comes with the Gloomstalker, stealthy, can use a few different weapons, has access to magic for supernatural abilities.
I'd really like any suggestions or ideas to help build this kind of character.
I actually made a monster based on that game. Anyway, you've probably got it right. Gloomstalker is great for darkness-based haunts. The Monk Way of Shadow works well too, because the Shadow Step feature simulates the ability to just show up when thematically appropriate. I really think that one is the D&D equivalent of Batman's ability to just show up and disappear quickly. There was a 3e prestige class, the "ghost-faced killer" that feels dead-on. It was a ninja sort that has the ability to become invisible and walk through objects to scare their victims to death. It's been homebrewed into a few subclasses on this site here, here, and here. I considered making one myself, but I think a Hexblade Warlock makes a very close substitute with wrathful smite, blur, blink, and phantasmal killer as subclass spells, the Relentless Hex (bonus action to teleport next to hex or Hexblade's curse victim) and Shroud of Shadow (invisibility at will) invocations, and the etherealness 7th-level arcanum.

Magic items can really add to the effect. The dread helm and smoldering armor are common magic items that produce neat visuals. The talking doll is perfect for horror setups. The mace of terror and sword of life stealing are fearsome weapons which are only rare.
