(Note: This thread discusses both the UA and Homebrew for Dead/Revenant in equal measure, so I wasn't sure which of those two sections to put this in. If this general section isn't quite right for it, my apologies! Also, links are in the bold text for ease.)
So back in 2016, WotC released a UA for the Revenant sub-race. However, I couldn't really find all that much discussion on it except for one old, short reddit thread. Similarly, there's an entry for a different take on the Revenant sub-race on the D&D Wiki as a Homebrew, but that was all I found on it; no discussion found at all for that one.
And as far as a similar concept goes, there's the Dead background by James Introcaso in the Xanathar's Lost Notes to Everything Else, strongly based onhis earlier solo DM's Guild offering. (If you click the "Full-size Preview" on his earlier offering, you can read James' earlier version of the Dead background in the preview; it's almost the exact same as what ended up in Xanathar's Lost Notes!)
I have a character where being a Revenant or having the Dead background would be perfect for him, but after trying to search for feedback (let alone even just discussions about them!), I'm coming up mostly empty handed. Has anyone here ever played one of these, either the 2016 UA Revenant sub-race, the D&D Wiki Homebrew Revenant sub-race, or James Introcaso's Dead background from either of the books it appears in? I'd love to hear some thoughts and feedback!
You can also just... use the Hollow One supernatural gift from Explorer's Guide to Wildemount. sure, it will take a little homebrew until Supernatural Gifts are properly implemented, but you don't need to use anything else. We officially have an "undead" or "revenant" race now because of this.

Oh, I didn’t know that existed! I had maybe read the term “Hallow One” maybe once since the book came out (I don’t own it yet) but it didn’t say what it was so I didn’t realize it at the time.
After looking it up and reading it over, I think it’s definitely a great option, and I think I prefer the Hallow One supernatural gift over the 2016 Revenant UA or the Homebrew sub-race. I still don’t know if I prefer it over the Dead background, but it’s certainly an intriguing option. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
