I don't know where this goes, but I really hope they transition the official token artwork for VTT to a top-down look (or add it as an option) by the time they release the virtual tabletop in DDB.
They should get Greg Bruni to work full-time at wotc and create every token. Pay him like 900k a year.
Actually everyone who makes RPGs and RPG artwork should make 900k a year. Come to think of it, the people who play RPGs should be getting paid at least 150k a year to play the RPGs and buy the products, so they can pay these wages. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON OUT THERE??
I used to think similarly, but after using tokens for so long, it is nice to actually see the character portrait and is easier on these older eyes to keep track of who is who and what is where when looking at the map on a 27" screen. Not to mention it doesn't take a proficient artist to generate a good looking token from artwork you already have...
I fully support paying artists more... though, 900K for anyone seems a bit extreme, but if I can get 150K to play every year, I'll happily chip in more for artists straight off the top.
One thing I will admit is that I spend an inordinate amount of time monkeying around with making my boards look good, when I should be working on my actual adventures.
One of my pet-peeves (not a real peeve because I respect everyone's game fun) but when the board-game logic starts to un-RPG the roleplaying game of D&D, and everyone is focusing on the VTT and being like "okay i'm moving my token this many spaces and this is what I see now. Whenever possible I use the VTT as a spacial reference to assist with combat organization, not like a game of Clue. So yeah, it's not really that important to me.
But I love those Greg Bruni art tokens! They're the digital equivalent of the awesome painted lead figures of my youth.
I also would like to say to the (many) illustrators of the official tokens who may be reading this that round tokens are totally awesome as well- the artwork on them is fantastic. Unfurrow your brow! I only mean that they don't create a "pose-able" scene with characters. (I know I'm being neurotic, but as a creator of things, I would be stung if I read this.)
