My DM, one time, had us roll 4d6 drop the lowest and do that 7 times and we could take the top 6. So that gave a little buffer.

I just used the D&D Beyond and rolled 7 times. I already removed the lowest die roll: 17, 11, 16, 10, 8, 15, 11
Dropping the "8" gives 80 points total. I think I would still rather have 73 points to spend as I like. To me, the 10 and 11s are pretty useless.
