Aye, but it wasn't generally an axe head attached at a terrible angle to the top of a hammer. It was usually axe on one side, hammer or pick on the other.
Fifth edition doesn't have any weapons that do two damage types, but there are almost no creatures where that matters (adding a hammer head means you've got a weapon that's somewhat better against skeletons).
It looks like half of an axe attached to part of a warhammer.
Seeing as D&D is first and foremost, about two things:
Having fun with people whose company you enjoy (hopefully).
If the book/rule/story/idea doesn't fit or doesn't exist, make it yourself!
It sounds like you've pretty much nailed exactly what it is from here on out. We shall forever be calling it a JKCorfy HamAxe.
In that case, I declare the stats for the JKCorfy HamAxe to be a versatile weapon dealing 1d8 (1d10) damage of character's choice of either bludgeoning or slashing damage, type to be determined upon successful attack roll.
Edit: Almost forgot, it weighs 3 lbs (less than a battleaxe, more than a warhammer) and costs 17 gp.

I could actually accept that. It does kinda look a bit like a halligan tool.
Looks like a hammer or maul, with the blade of a glaive on the end...

Just sort of looks like a short chunky glaive to me... If I wanted to have that weapon in a game I'd def pick a glaive
