Hi all. My group’s been playing on Roll20 over the pandemic and we’re irritated with its klunkiness. Heard rave reviews about Foundry and I’m keen to learn more- but I have a really, really basic question that I can’t find a simple answer to, and it worries me, given that it’s a technical question in a hobby full of technically-inclined dorks (he said, kindly). In fairness, the problem might be that I just can’t find it and/or haven’t looked hard enough, but in any event, the question is this:
Can you run a DDB module, say, Strahd, on Foundry? If so, how?
While I’m not (!!) technically-inclined, I’m not a complete Luddite- so while a simple step-by-step how-to would be awesome, I can deal with some technical crap. No issues throwing a reasonable amount of money at the problem, if it helps. Thanks in advance!
It imports the map right into scenes and all the text from the book in neat little journal entrys.
I havent played around much with it yet. Just tested this basic stuff out, i think you still have to place the monster manually once you imported the map.

VTTA is what you need to use. I've seen what foundry can do and it is way more immersive than roll20. They just need to smooth out some of the rough spots and performance/bug issues for a variety of computers.
To be rampantly, pedantically clear, it’s possible by way of the extension, and would require (obviously) the purchase of the DDB module, the DDB Monster Manual, and, unless I want to be stuck with the bare bones classes and spells offered in the freebie version, the PHG/XG2E/etc.? And that also, I’d need to populate the dungeon with the monsters- manually?
I don’t mean to come across as thick-headed; it’s just that I want to make sure I know what’s involved before I shell out $ for the resources. I really appreciate your inputs- and thanks again!
Yes, VTTA will import the map, but you will have to populate it yourself with monsters in each of the rooms, as well as traps, etc.
I think that VTTA will import monster stat blocks into foundry too, but I don't know if it imports the images which will be used for tokens. I suspect it doesn't create nice tokens with surrounds (you'd need a separate tool like tokentool [free] to that).
Buying an adventure on roll20 saves so much work compared to having to set up an adventure manually - which you'd have to do on both roll20 (if you didn't pay them for the prebuilt adventure) or foundry.
From what I've seen, Foundry only supports SRD character classes. It doesn't have anything in the character sheets for other classes, but that isn't a problem if you'll be using the beyond20 browser extension so that players can manage their characters on DDB.
In your (whoever’s) opinion, is the extra work required for a longer campaign (we’re leaning towards Abyss) using Foundry justified? Is Foundry that much better than Roll20 to make the extra annoying work of populating the maps worthwhile?

IMO, yes.
I don't use Roll 20 for D&D, but I did do a 16-hour Ironsworn campaign with it, and I hated the Roll 20 interface for nearly everything compared with Foundry. Literally the only reason I did Roll 20 at all is that there is currently no Foundry module for Ironsworn.
Yes, with Foundry you have to do the work of importing everything once, either manually or via some sort of extension. But once it's imported, you are good to go.... and Foundry's UI is much nicer than Roll 20's. I also found Foundry's map features superior.
That's my opinion of course; I am sure there are others who will swear by Roll 20.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
If you import the maps directly from here with the extension it isnt a lot of work to do to populate the map.
There is a module for foundry from the same guy which lets you craft tokens right in foundry itself with the artwork from the respective book or a simple internet link.
Additionaly i used the importer from MR Primate (just google that), for a onetime payment of 5 bucks i have all the monsters from all the books i own here importet into a compendium in foundry with one simple mouseclick. If you want to read a little bit more you can even write a little module yourself which allows you to move the monster between different game worlds.
And yes, i think foundry is so much better, atleast for me. i run one game at roll20 and one in foundry so far. Currently in the work the prepare descent into avernus on foundry. I just think roll20 was way to clunky, for example to adjust fog of war if you dont pay for the sub to have access to dynamic lightning. And the countless modules you can have in foundry are really helpful for me to just smooth out some processes of preparing and actually running the game.
hey, so I converted to foundry to make things smoother for my online game, and I've been trying to import adventures into my worlds from ddb, but VVTA doesn't seem to work anymore due to the creator stopping the integration. I've spent a lot of time trying to get it to work and I've looked up multiple guides to try and import the adventures to no avail. is there any other way to get the content from the adventures into foundry as of now?
I'm on Mr. Primate's Patreon. He's taken over the reins, pretty much, from VTTA and is working on the beta version of his Adventure Importer. He does have, currently, a good monster, spells and item importer as well as character importer. So that might help with some of your work. As far as Adventure importer at this moment, there isn't one that I'm aware off. But I'm still a noob.
thank you ,I've heard about Mr. primate's beta adventure importer, I just wasn't able to find any source to tell me if it works or not and I was unwilling to pay for the patreon until I knew for sure that it did.

You totally can.
Check out the vtta chrome extension.
It imports the map right into scenes and all the text from the book in neat little journal entrys.

Thanks for the reply, guys.
