It is the average damage that comes from 1d8 + 3. Some people don't roll the damage on monsters and just take the average. That's why the hit points of monsters also have the same format, so some people can use the average but others can roll for HP.
I see so the hit players get from monsters (can) be the same or rolled or the same or rolled or the same... or r...rr.o...l..e...d (dose it matter) I only ask as I have been rolling!

Players should always roll for attacks?
Yes, the GM can choose to roll for damage or take the average.
Players should always roll. Mainly because it's more fun. It's "Rolling Dice and Kicking Ass!" not, "Look at my sheet and do blah blah."

So my question is probably really simple 🤔
Ref to title.. It says +5 to hit, ranged bla bla then says hit:7 (1d8 +3)
So the +5 is what you add to the d20 roll
Then if beat the AC you roll 1 d8 dice and add the 3... thats damage done!
But what the beep is the 7 all about? What and why is it there? Me and my wife are so confused its on our wepon sheets
Its even on the manticore stats for (bite and scratch and spikes) all non weighted (my original guess!!)
Thanks in advance ☺

Thats interesting thank you so much for explaining that.
It arguably speeds up combat by removing a roll from the resolution. I've never used it though.

Just to add on, PCs should be rolling dice - usually using averages is reserved for the DM and monsters.
Just adding to make sure.
Beating the target's AC means: equal or higher than the number.
