So I've always been a fan of the DnD/Forgotten Realms Universe. Played many games using dnd rulesets (Baldur's Gate 1&2, NWN2, Pillars of Eternity, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Pathfinder: Kingmaker). Now I want to get into the real thing. I just created my first character using the DnD Beyond Character Builder, and I have my Starter Set and PHB on the way. Should I also get the DMG??? I don't plan on being a DM for quite some time, but is there anything in there that I NEED to be successful?
So, are you also looking for a group to play D&D with, as this forum is the "Looking For Group" area of the forum. It's helpful to post what kind of game you're looking for whether it be in-person or online based. Your timezone, availability, gaming experience, and all that jazz are helpful to know.
As for your question, to play 5E D&D you only need the Player's Handbook for starters. That's it. The DM's guide is for making your own adventures, and there are various supplements (such as Xanathar's Guide to Everything and The Sword Coast Adventurers Guide) which offer more options for gameplay, but are not necessary to play the game.
Ok, awesome that's the main thing I needed to know. Sorry I didn't realize this was LFG when I was writing this post... I will post in General until I'm ready to start. Thanks again for the info!

Thanks for any and all help.
