The duergar begin exchanging glances, no longer looking as confident as they once were. Their leader calls out “No backing down now! Nildar will have our heads if he hears we were cowards!”
M1 swings his blade at Morkeleb, though Senushi’s insults seem to have thrown him off his game: 8 for 2 Piercing damage and 8 Psychic damage. He then waves his hands once more and says, “Come on big man, deal with your friend for me…” Morkeleb make a DC 12 INT Save or use a reaction to attack Barnabus.
With that, Jar is able to successfully dispatch D1 as well. The remaining duergar, though unhurt up to now, examines the battlefield and recognizes the situation. He disengages and starts fleeing east, leaving the lantern behind in the hands of his fallen leader.
The party can choose to give continue initiative as he has only moved 30 feet, or let him go and conclude the combat.
Morkeleb brays loudly with laughter at the retreating enemy. He shouts, "Run back to your foul clan, and tell them how Morkeleb of the Vexashene has slain your kin!"
Garret retrieves the lantern as the last duergar runs off. "Many thanks. We might be lost out here for days without it. Why would they be so interested in stealing just this?"
Leaving that question lingering, he leads the way back to camp and the party completes their rest. The following day is far less eventful, though you do pass a few dead figures resembling the berserkers you saw yesterday, seemingly killed by the same war picks the duergar use, if you examine their wounds. In late afternoon, you are lead into sight of Caer-Konig, your destination. The town is surrounded by a wooden palisade, though the gate is currently unlocked. It sits at the foot of Kelvin's Cairn. The town consists of terraced rows of houses receding from the shores of the lake. There are signs of what was once a harbor, though the ice has done far more damage to it than you've seen elsewhere. Townspeople here seem surprised to see travelers at all, as the harbor situation has shut down the ferry that you locals would know to be the only reliable way here most of the year. Some of the buildings are decorated with a silhouette of a white fish.
A few points of interest include:
- Hook Line and Sinker, a tavern that is obviously the most popular place in town, based on where the commoners are heading. - Frozenfar Expeditions, a small wooden shop that sells proper adventuring gear. They also appear to have an outdoor kennel for sled dogs. - The Northern Light, and inn that has obviously seen better days. it is poorly lit and has few tenants.
Upon entering town, Garret confirms that he will see about rooms at the inn. Shortly after he leaves, you pass a pile of snow that suddenly stirs. A large silver dragonborn bursts from beneath the snow. "Creeping bastards! Now I've got- huh?" He looks at you all quizzically, then pulls down the scarf covering his face. Though he is well armored, he seems to be holding an empty wine bottle for a weapon. He then belches and grins at the party. "Pardon my manners. Bit jittery as of late, but you're all too... conspicuous to be thieves. Name's Trovus, speaker o' Caer-Konig." He offers an unsteady hand for a shake.
Morkeleb sizes up the fellow dragonborn. "We're not related," he says, as though coming to that conclusion after some deliberation. Then Morkeleb introduces himself as he always does.
