I’ve seen images that give me a lot of inspiration for a ruined/post-apocalyptic setting like The Last of Us, Dying Light 2, (And, yes I know it hasn’t released yet, but the trailer has shown that the worlds gone to hell.) Metro, or Fallout. The style I’m thinking of I’d dilapidated buildings, overgrowth, semi-functioning technology, and strange monsters that have adapted to the new, harsh landscape that was made by the Old Races. Some weapons have been modified from their original purpose, sign axes, pipe maces, among other things. There are regular weapons too, like old guns, machetes, combat knives, and chainsaws. Some strange and uncommon weapons are used too, like flamethrowers, strong UV flashlights, and “living weapons.” Anyway, tell me some of your ideas!
I love using video games as inspiration, so many good pieces of story, lore and characters I can make my own. The Last of Us and Fallout especially are great places to get post apoc inspo, for sure.
You might want to consider making trading and scavenging more prominent in your setting. Scarce resources and the need to bargain or find the items you need can really make the post-apocalyptic setting come to life.

Why not uses the days after the fall of the Netheril Empire in the Forgotten Realms?
City's fallen from the sky, refugees of a now collapsed kingdom. Their technology and magic unlike anything seen before or after. Imagine the Chaos that swept the Realms after this Magic kingdom that dominated from the North to the far south, the only surviving semi reminiscence of its former glory the Kingdom of Halruaa. The immediate years after the Fall of the Netherise would have been like those after an apocalypse.

(Edited to remove needless rambling)
If you love a character, you give them pain, ruin their lives, make them suffer. Maybe even throw in a heroic death.

Survival aspects would definitely be fun to play on too. And emphasising that world itself is dangerous, like encountering spores or radiation.
