Since elves only need a 4 hour meditation, rather than 8 hours of rest (of which 6 asleep) for a long rest, an elf has 2-4 hours extra to do stuff while their party is asleep/resting.
So after you take your 4 hour meditation, you cast Find Familiar using a wild shape rather than spellslot for your wild companion feature. You take a short rest to replenish your use of wild shape. You then transform yourself into a beast of your choosing for one use of your wild shape. You then take another short rest, in your beast form, to replenish your use of wildshape. Congrats, you now are a beast and have a familiar, at the start of the day, and still have all your uses of wildshape available for the day.
Sure, though keep in mind you can only stay in Beast form for so long. The limit is half your Druid level (in hours) so you'd need to be a level 4 Druid before this would work at all, and even after that these shenanigans are cutting an hour out of your Wild Shape time. Moreso if everyone else in your party is still long-resting and you have to wait for them to get up.

Fair point, still, the familiar is essentially free this way, and using the wild companion feature to cast it means it stays until your next long rest at least.
And once your level is high enough for your beast form to stick through a short rest, it's still some free time as a beast immediately after that without needing to make your party wait on your short rest. (And perhaps if you're creative you could even figure some light activity to do in beast form during that short rest to make most of your beast time)

Why not just cast find familiar as a ritual? No need to use either a spell slot or a use of wild shape.

Druids can't prepare find familiar; they can only cast it with the feature.
The temporary hit points from spells and effects with durations may not work like that, they are a number of discussions about the issue so I would expect table variation.
The use of Elf trance has some additional benefits
2nd level: use to gain a familiar, short rest to regain Wild Shape
5th Level: covert wild shape to get an additional 1st level spell slots, slot can be used for a Wild Shape allowing you to bank one, short rest.
20th level: covert 4 wild shapes to an 8th level slot, short reat 4 times to regain them. Now you have to choose to grab 1st level slot and familiar and start day with 2 wild shapes knowing you get one back once you run out each initiative.

Relevant rule: "Duration p29 Temporary Hit Points last until they're depleted or you finish a Long Rest."
There's debate on the topic because some people dislike this change, but that's definitely how it works in the rules. You are of course free to change the rules at your table.
So you CAN do a short rest while in wild shape form? Can someone point me to the rules that says this? I'm having a discussion with my group about this. Thanks!

Yes, you can, because nothing in either the Wild Shape feature or the Short Rest rules says you can’t.
However, because Wild Shape lasts a number of hours equal to half your Druid level rounded down, until level 4 a Short Rest would consume the entire duration of your Wild Shape.
I'm currently a level 8. I thought about shaping into a mouse, taking a short rest for 2 hours in the shirt pocket of one of my companions as they travel and recover some slots that way. Any other ideas that are similar to this?

That sounds like it would work, assuming you’re Circle of the Land. (Other subclasses could still take a Short Rest that way but wouldn’t regain any spell slots.)
So if you Long Rest you need to sleep unless you have a feature that says you don't but it is likely that feature is racial and therefore won't apply in wild shape so if you go to sleep in wild shape you immediately become incapacitated and drop wild shape.
Short Rest doesn't say anything about sleep, just specific things you can't do.
nterrupting the Rest. A Short Rest is stopped by the following interruptions:

If nothing else doing it this way gets you the temporary HP of using Wild Shape even if you drop form. And that's useful.
Good catch!

Lightning flashes, it creates ash. The ash forms a human.

Circle of the Moon... no spell slots recovered, just two wildshape slots.

An interrupted Short Rest confers no benefits.
So as long as you don't do any of those things you can short rest in wild shape.
