So I've had an idea for a campaign but if it's alresdy been done before.. why try to reinvent the wheel?
Long term overview would be of two(or more?) rival nations/city states. Historically they have been in a '''cold war" with only minor border troubles and political games. As the campaign begins this is changing. There have been some almost "reckless" engagements between them with heavy losses each time. Whispers of enemy atrocities at the borderorde begin to circulate both sides of the escalating conflict.
This is of course distant, maybe even irrelevant news to our adventurers. I'd envisage an open start letting the players find their own ties and motivations to the region which I would then use to draw them into the real story.
In the shadows, the rival nations are being manipulated by a powerful Vampire's (or similar to be the BBEG) network of agents. Corpses for his undead legion whilst simultaneously weakening and destabilising the region for conquest.
The meat of the campaign being them hopefully (if I get the motivations right..) unravelling the plot and going on to face the BBEG who I imagine being a recurring issue through the later stages.
The basic plot of a lot of d&d stories is that something bad is happening, like a war, and devils or demons are the cause behind the scenes. Okay, not every time. Sometimes it’s a lich. But it has been done so many times because it works. If it’s new to your players, go for it.
