After a PC releases an entity from an Iron Flask for a task/combat that lasts only a few minutes, is there any reason that they can’t just spend the rest of the remaining hour attempting to get the thing back in the flask?
With a DC of 17 it seems inevitable that, even with disadvantage, with a rate of 10 rolls per minute eventually even the most powerful entity is going to roll a double fail and be sucked back into the flask.
does the creature's time reset everytime its sucked back inside the flask? so like 55 mins call it/ capture it back, then boom you get another hour when released again?
I don't think that you can command the creature to get in the flask, because it doesn't give any caveats for a willing creature to automatically fail the save. There's also nothing indicating any ability to willingly get into the flask - though if the creature were small enough then it could feasably climb in through the open stopper.
You could spend the rest of the time trying to catch it, and as you said would likely end up succeeding eventually, even with it having advantage on the saves. Of course, this is dependent on where you are - if you capture an air elemental, and then release it somewhere it is native to, then it cannot be recaptured (as it only works on creatures not native to the plane you are on).
Yeah I think you could spend your actions to try and recapture it, provided you're not on its home plane. Personally a DC 17 doesn't feel right for some of the higher CR creatures on the random table like the Planetar and Solar, so I would likely adjust the DC based on what was trapped. I wouldn't care if they have something like an elemental trapped.
Now granted it is a legendary item, but it still seems a little too easy to keep a really high CR creature as a pet essentially. For example Demogorgon only has a +3 to Wisdom, meaning you have a 65% chance to trap it in the flask (assuming the legendary resistances are used up). Then your party has a CR26 Demon Lord pet they can use for less than an hour and without too much trouble get back into the flask, especially if they can debuff saving throws at all like using Bane.

Strictly by what's written i'd say that they could simply command the creature to return to the flask.
yeah it will obey your commands for an hour...outside ordering it to kill itself. i think you could just order it back into the flask.
