I'm kick starting a homebrew campaign this weekend and I realised that the area I have designed needs a little more filling, so I'm hoping I can get some inspiration from my fellow DMs on here!
If you're expecting to play in a campaign this weekend with me as DM, I trust you to not read further!
The setting is a demiplane called the Circle Sea, which is the same as the material plane except the sea levels are so high that only the tops of the mountains protrude as islands. it is also a small, looping plane - when the islands disappear over one horizon, they appear on the horizon ahead.
I have 2 islands mapped out for the main quest I've set out for this demiplane, but I have realised there's nothing to stop the players from going to the other 2, and I have nothing planned for them!
One island is the island of steam, which is volcanic and populated by magma and steam mephits, and the other is populated by a tribe of stone elementals. The plane is linked to controlling the weather in the region, so I am considering making these last two islands elementally themed as well. So one of ice perhaps. I'm at a loss for the last one. perhaps air?
I'd like to make it something they can interact with, rather than merely being "there". I'd rather add more story to this than simply cut it to two islands!
any ideas welcomely received - I'm drawing an absolute blank!
If you want to adhere to the theme, maybe one of them is elemental air and populated by an elemental air lich and his invisible stalker minions, and is surrounded by powerful winds.
The other one shouldn't be water, but maybe should be metallic. Lots of outcroppings, and populated by sentient iron golems or maybe even metallic dragons.

These are cool ideas, but they are perhaps too powerful for the party -they are going to be going from level 2 to level 4 in this area, so they won't be a match for an iron golem or a lich!
I have settled on my first island to be an Island of Sun, which features Shadows which instead hide in sunlight, called Lightfiends. There is an abandoned village, and no wildlife because the Lightfiends have eaten everything. There is a single Gnome left alive in the caves beneath the island, who lives in utter darkness for fear of the light, and is making a device t ocover the entire island in darkness to kill the Lightfiends.
I've decided the second island needs to be a source of food for people on the plane, so it's a forest protected by Dryads, where you can take what you need, but no more. I also added a creature of my own devising which might end up becoming someone's companion, and could cause merry hell with the party - this is going to be fun!

I assume the people never leave that island, if it’s the only source of food, and you can’t take extra, it would make trips longer than a day or two very difficult.
It’s going to seem like a weird suggestion but try rolling the horde magic item tables but for the island.
you end up with a bunch of things that people can find but also you can start using them for inspiration “why is x item here”
I was plotting out a Demon Lords fortress and used this method ending up with among other things 6 velvet masks with silver thread lining and about 10 potion’s - this led to the castle also being home to a cult of warlocks who worshipped the demon lords (wearing the masks) with a laboratory full of wired experiments.
I can say for certain neither would of ended up in the castle without rolling on the item chart

Now I just need to work out the final island...
