So im looking to start a new campaign and I was thinking a wizard school game could be fun. I like making traps and puzzles and really enjoy seeing the players come up with different ways to solve encounters.
One thing I was trying to figure out is how to award exp for other things that they might want to do in a wizard school (aka helping teachers or even just Studying and practicing their magic).
Normally it's just a given that that is what they do as they adventure but in a school style setting I think I might need some more rules for that
Just keep in mind that some activities might be too trivial to award XP for. I would rule that, if the task doesn't require any character resources (or at least doesn't require a lot of creativity to avoid using said resources), it’s not worth XP.
Consider giving them little "quests" such as "Help Master Wizard Pholtus Make a Magic Item!" or "Study and Learn About an Ancient Magical Order."
Use the downtime rules from Xanathar's Guide to Everything to help add interesting activities.
Also, it's OK to give characters maintenance experience for just being alive. I started doing that back in the 1990s with the Birthright campaign setting. PCs and NPCs who didn't take actions in a political season got 100 xp per level per month. This allowed for slow growth that wasn't ever as good as adventure can be and still let people grow if they needed to do more mundane tasks.
Give the characters little magical trinkets, potions or one time use magical scrolls as a reward. Maybe they are rewarded with little familiars like a rat or something. I agree with RaSeyssel, I'd use milestones.

I would suggest using milestones, as it would be easier to just avoid trying to calculate XP in that scenario.
If you're dead set in using XP, you can award XP based on the difficulty of the task - as if it were an encounter - (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/building-combat-encounters).

Hope it helps
Just an FYI, the strixhaven book, which is basically school based D&D, is due out nov 16.
I did not know that thank you!
I do prefer milestone but my players really like experience instead so I was going to try to do exp if I can figure out a good solution
