I am putting together a campaign for a solo adventure for my fiancee. We have both played dnd together before, but we took a break and I kept reading up on it and she didn't so she's fairly new to it, but not entirely new! Rusty, if you will.
She's made a ranger character, I suggested she start at level 3 as it gives her enough HP to survive a single bad round and lets her get a subclass. As she's familiar enough with the rules, level 1 & 2 might have been a bit of a drag, especially solo! She's gone with the gathering swarm ranger with twig blights from Tasha's (or it might have been Xanathar's...).
So, I guess what I'm looking for here is an idea of what I should include in the opening sessions to make sure that she has a firm grasp of the basics, before I go introducing things like Heists and assassinations and riddles and all those things which could be overwhelming if the basics aren't covered!
I'm thinking it'll need to involve straight up combat, sneaky combat, ability checks, and ability saves.
She's going to be starting at her home in the woods, and the adventure ultimately needs to lead her to an artificer who lives in a mansion somewhere deeper in the woods, where the main adventure will start. I'm considering some sort of trail for her to follow, so it also helps give her the basics of that sort of thing (and plays to the strengths of the class).
I’d really push the ranger angle. Someone is messing with her forest, or whatever, and she’s got to stop them. So noticing what’s wrong, tracking them. Maybe she gets to ambush a couple of them, then they send the goons for her. Random encounters with angry beasts. And maybe give her a sidekick. Like the caster kind you can flavor as a druid who protects the same place.
I like that idea of tracking of a target thru the forest for a ranger. Definitely play to those strengths and get used to that hunters mark. Maybe some kind of maze that serves a a test to gain access to path of the mansion.
I'm running something similar for a friend of mine. This will be my first time as a DM and I found a nice duet adventure for her, but to introduce her to finding things, combat and checks I'm having her meet up with an NPC connected to the story, and do a little 10 room dungeon. I'm starting her off at level 1 with absolutely nothing so she will find all her starter gear in his dungeon. It also will help her get used to d&d beyond.

Does anyone have any advice for this?
