So I DM a game with a kobold wizard "conspiracy theorist" character who is driven to find the "truth" of the world. A few sessions ago, they ran into an otherworldly aberration (essentially an alien) that tried tempting him with "forbidden knowledge". This led the party to begin joking about how this would be the kobolds journey into warlock multiclass. What they don't know is that I plan on having this aberration continue to appear periodically and the idea that someone could have it as a patron is actually really cool lol
Unfortunately, the Wizard has a 7 charisma. But in the past, I have seen people talk about the idea of allowing warlock to be intelligence based due to the fact that the patron is "teaching" the warlock abilities. I was thinking of using this and offering the opportunity to the player BUT, This particular player can be a little power-gamey/cheesy (isn't above taking advantage of exploits).
Basically, I wanna know if there's any combo/strategy/ability synergy that is particularly noteworthy with an evocation wizard/Great Old One Warlock multiclass that only requires INT that I should be on the look out for. If its just "strong" or "good" I can handle that. I wanna know if there's any way to cheese the two together.
If it helps in your decision making, INT based warlock was intended during playtest of 5e, but it was changed because everyone wanted CHA back. I personally like it - it gives INT more representation among PCs.
I can't think of any really cheesy combos with an INT warlock. I think CHA offers way more combos anyway (warlock/paladin or warlock/sorcerer come to mind), so I think you're probably ok to offer it to the PC.
The only weird thing I can think about is the possible interaction between the level 10 evocation wizard thing, and agonizing blast. Though since evoc ability specifies "One damage roll" I think its prolly fine. Having one blast of EB do 1d10+2xINT IS strong, but hardly game breaking i think
I think a question that needs to be asked is...does the player want to multiclass? It might be a moot point if they wouldn't actually go for it upon offer, since they'd be sacrificing ASIs and feats.
A warlock multiclass would give your player access to Pact Magic and two spell lists that would be interchangeable - meaning a warlock spell can be upcast using a wizard spell slot, and a wizard spell can be cast with a Pact Magic slot that regenerates on a short rest. With enough levels in warlock, a wizardlock could just spam Fireball all day long if they keep taking naps. If you have problems with players going nova on your baddies and making encounters a breeze, this will only add to that - particularly since warlock cantrips are strong and all cantrips scale at character level, not class level.
A warlock multiclass also comes with light armor proficiency. Assuming a DEX of 14, studded leather armor, and the Shield spell, your player could have an effective AC of 19 for as long as he has spell slots.
Is any of this game-breaking? No. Could it be cheesed and annoying to DM? Yes.
