So I am about to begin running my first game for an all new group of players. I wanted to start with a module to lay the foundation of how to set up towns, quests, NPCs, etc. I settled on doing Lost Mine of Phandelver, however I wasn't sure where to go with the campaign once they finished the module.
I was thinking that perhaps changing the Black Spider to being a Werespider from the Feywild that could serve as an evil Archfey's grunt. The Archfey is looking to set up a Fairy Court in the Prime Material Planed the Black Spider could be looking for Wave Echo Cave in order to recover an artifact which will bring the Feywild and Prime Material planes closer than they ever have been, making this a prime material Fey Court possible.
If I decided to make these changes in order to extend the campaign possibly much further, does anyone have suggestions on who this Archfey would want to recruit for their new fairy court, or any other changes to make to the module in order to tie in into the Fey theme a bit more from the get go? I was thinking of including a coven of hags, some variant troll, a Winter Aladdin, and maybe a mercenary Yugaloth. Also maybe replacing some of the creatures such as the Orcs to be quicklings or redcaps.
I wouldn't worry too much at the start what to do after this campaign. Have some fun 'maybe' ideas and then see where the adventure takes you. By the middle, you and your players will have a MUCH better idea of what you would like to do next, even if it is to start again with new characters somewhere. There is something to be said for running a self contained mini campaign for your first go.
That said, you could lean into the new fey origins of goblinoids and have King Grol as the agent of the archery. After the adventure ends, the party returns to Phandalin where they are greeted by a mysterious Eladrin who introduces himself as, I don't know, Mister Sly, and says;
"Well hello! You are the party that have got my master in such a tizzy! I have no idea why he had such an affection for that old Bugaboobear but there you go. Oh don't worry, no hard feelings. He's not here for you. It's this place. Phandalin. Little Phanda. He's taken quite a shine to it. Yes, he likes it *very much*. And what the master likes, he takes"
The players then watch as Mr Sly fades away and disappears. Along with the entire town.
Just off the top of my head
