You read the title! I'm making a fan-based D&D video game! This might take me a year or two to publish, but I'm going to share a little hint on what it's about.
Basically, I'll make a story campaign once I have the whole story thought through, and then I'll have some players (at most three) to play test it, with me as the DM. My siblings (who are new to DND) decided to join the play testing fellowship.
The players can be whatever they want, but in the video game, there are going to be three main characters: the human fighter (named to be determined), Milo (named after my cousin's cat) the rouge dwarf, and Thia (rhymes with my step sister's name) the druid elf.
The video game takes place in the Forgotten Realms setting. The specific place is still being decided, but is some where in the continent of Faerûn.
The villain is an anonymous human sorcerer whos plan is to wipe out all life, with the sorcerer (even gender is unknown to everyone) reshaping the Earth through what it "should be". Evil lair/final dungeon's location will be somewhere around the Northwest, where harsh winter weather lays...
Wish me luck on the project!
If you have any suggestions to add, please comment!

I'm curious as to how the game is intended to work - you've said you'll test it with you as DM, are you making a D&D simulator then? Or are you playing a campaign and making a game of the story behind you?
I could imagine this would work well as a sort of top-down game similar to Enter the Gungeon. Different enemies could have various different attack patterns, and the bosses could have some bullet hell aspects. Evading a goblin's arrows would be much easier than the screen-sweeping lazers of a Beholder, for instance.

Start simple. I've seen too many developments die because people tried to do everything at once. Get systems in place and working one at a time. Think of it like sculpting. You will also be able to customize things for a "Digital DM" as you encounter them rather than try to code the entire rules of 5e only to find that some things don't work in that environment and those things affect a webwork of other things. Code what is needed. A working (if barebones) gameplay loop is likely necessary before even considering to script the story and to design the artwork. Start with a plan for development but also expect that plan to change a lot.
Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
Also, you'll need to be aware of issues that can come up if you decide to set the game in the Forgotten Realms or use other Intellectual Property that is owned by Wizards of the Coast. Good luck with the project!

This. You can use the 5th Edition Standard Reference Document (SRD) to make video games with D&D rules, seeing as Solasta: Crown of the Magister exists, and before that OGL games existed too (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, for instance, used the d20 system). But as David42 rightly says, make sure you read all the necessary legalities and add the required disclaimers before publishing. I've seen too many awesome fan projects go down the pan simply due to intellectual property disputes.

I'm interested to know what tools you're planning for creating your game. I've done some text-based 5e games using Twine and I've found it pretty easy to use as a solo game developer. Here's a short intro to using Twine to make solo 5e gamebooks. As others have suggested, navigating intellectual property rights can be a difficulty, especially if you intend to publish a setting in FR.
You see, I'll be making a story of it first. Once I'm done, the people who signed up (maximum of three) will play test the whole campaign. If they report any bugs, I'll fix them, as well as any I'll notice myself.
Once that's done, then I'll be making the video game based entirely of the tested campaign.
Now that I answered your question, the only thing I ask of you is to wish me luck!

It will be turn-based action, just like most RPG's should be.
Turn-based fighting is one of the most addicting things when it comes to RPG games. Now a days, people start to forgot what turn-based action is! However, some of them are still rather good. One example might be Minecraft Dungeons. it has all the RPG elements, but the action is oriented.
Anyways, the game is turn-based, and thanks for the tip about the hexes!

Will it be action oriented or turn-based?
IF turn based, I would recommend using hexes for your maps.

Hello, TheTrapmaste3r_TPKer
There's nothing I like to trap players to play my campaigns than--well--traps! Just as long that they're not too much of a pain in the butt.
My favorite traps in RPG games are Mimics pretending to be treasure chests. it's a classic!
Anyways, keep on trapping those players!
