Ok so the basic overarching story is that theres a group of powerful mages that formed a cult to bring power to an eldritch horror from another world, and have recently figured out how to bring it back, but several of the members of the cult deserted when they realised that this was the groups true goal rather than what they were told. This meant that they were able to form a newer group and recruit adventurers who they come across in the tavern. The way the horror works is that in this world, the more a god is respected and believed in, the more power and importance it has. However, the opposite is true with this horror, where it instead gains power by being feared, and so the way the cult will bring it to its full power is by bringing down the power of others gods and making the world fear their own patron. The patrons goal is to merge its own reality with the material plane so that it may feed on the fear of the mortals, and become king of the realms.
some story branches of this is:
. The main members of the cult have been granted a small fraction of its power, causing them to gain the trait of fear power, and are set on replacing the current pantheon in their patrons image
. The party’s warlock has a fey patron who is in the feywild court, and so would have her world taken over by the horror if the cult were to succeed, and so is set on helping her warlock bring the cult down by sending him toward the tavern owned by the deserters
. The barbarian in the party has a lost brother, and the brother is going to be found out to have faked his death in order to join the cult, and become the new world’s god of the ocean
Any help on improving the story in any way is welcomed and thanks if you do give any feedback
If it helps, the main references and inspirations i used for the campaign idea are several stories i wrote some years ago as a book idea, and the fear power idea is from a mix of rise of the guardians and the magnus archives.
also, the party is made up of a wood elf druid, wood elf rogue, high elf warlock, and two gnome barbarians
This seems like a good over-arching storyline for a campaign. In summation it's "Evil cult of mages seek to summon their dark god and kill the other gods." That seems like something worth preventing.
Some things to consider (no need to provide the answers here, this is just food for thought):
Why would someone want to serve this evil god? If it causes the worlds to merge, isn't that terrible for everyone?
Is it one insane bad guy leading this, or are multiple mages in on it? If so, then how did they come together?
Assuming that this is a campaign to begin at level 1, what is the village-sized hook that will get things going? What you've described seems like it would be a long-term threat to solve, but early on the PCs are going to need to do some small scale stuff.
Why would the deserters recruit PCs in a tavern rather than going straight to the highest authorities in the land? "This small group of ruffians look like they'll be able to take on those powerful wizards that we couldn't stop ourselves, let's pay them to help!" Why not go straight to the nearest king, archmage, high cleric etc?
