The simulacrum created by the Oblex implies that the intent of the identity is illusion, or at least deception. So my question is how easy to see the tether is? Does the Oblex know how best to position both the simulacrum and the tether so that it isn't readily visible to creatures or is it just a 1 inch wide slimy rope that slithers off into some sewer grate? Specifically curious to know if this Oblex posing as a noble for instance, could reliably feign being said person for some time or if the moment they're seen by anybody other than a wildly imperceptive character they'd be found out. TLDR: Do Oblex's automatically hide their tethers and its up to investigation or perception to find it or it out in the open, slinking about?
Mordenkainen says "when oblexes feed on thoughts, they can form weird copies of their prey," and those duplicates are "indistinguishable from their victims except for a faint sulfurous smell." there's a one-inch tether, but19 INT (or more) is very likely enough to keep it well hidden at all times.
my question would be in which way is the tether immune to damage? i interpret this as it would heal and form up again instantly around a sword or boot. but would it stop a door from closing or be severed (and the copy splatter)? making excuses not to go through doors could be very telling. yeah, it's probably all dm fiat, although do keep in mind that high INT (and aversion to fire!)!
EDIT: i was just reading someone on reddit recommending the dm always note just a little extra ground-level environmental detail as a sort of subtle hint to the players: "heavy grass, rushing water, low fog," bunched-up rugs, standing beside corners, etc. additionally, legacy Elder Oblexes could innately cast hallucinatory terrain for cover or, in a pinch, confusion with the vocal and somatic components occurring unnoticed 150ft away. all but the young spawns can charm personat will. if you normalize passing notes across the table to players (with many bluffs) then it'll be easier to follow up a wisdom check with a "you are charmed. don't tell anyone else, but __________'s suggestions are much more convincing than your own desires" or "for now you are copy of you. act natural but avoid fire (yuck!). try to convince everyone to follow you into the ________ ."

unhappy at the way in which we lost individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
