I am working on my first session as a DM, at the moment I’m playing as well in my partner campaign, but I wanted to start making my own so he could play with us as well.
Because we have an ongoing campaign I decided to homebrew my one shot, creating a 4/5h sessions in which my friends will use their 4th level character.
The story is basically inspired by the fact that two of them just had a baby, so the baby will be involved as a cursed king that has been turned into a baby with wild magic spells - I saw a great idea about a dm dad involving his toddler in the game, using a Jack Jack style for him to have powers without being harmed as well.
The characters will be teleported in this word as the saviours needed to fix the curse that will be based in a puzzle based dungeon.
I want to give them a bad guy in disguise, hence they need to expect combat but not from a npc that travels with them.
They will have two npc travelling with them: the paladin guard captain and the king right hand.
My idea is to go thought the dungeon, have a very minor encounter that hopefully will create some wounds, give them some potions of deceiving and then have the king right hand kill the paladin and basically come out from the disguise.
My question is, do you think it’s possible not make them suspicious? How can I keep it hidden? And what should the real identity of the bad guy for 6 player level 4? I was thinking a spell caster to keep things interesting!
Sorry if this was a very long thread, but I’m so excited I want to make my friend really enjoy the session! I want them to fear that I could kill them and they will not be able to be back to the original campaign - of course that is not happening as this is more like a vivid dream of sort!

Thank you so much for your help in advance!
