I have another conundrum that might be coming up in the next few sessions.
Long story short one of my characters has obtained a piece of possessed armour which has promised him power if it feeds him souls (none of the res of the party know this) this has therefore culminated in a List of enemies appearing on the armours sleeve (I know I am stealing slightly from CR but that was my inspiration).
Now this List started with 12 names, the BBEG and then all 11 of his chief underlings but after a few developments, basically some wishes rewriting reality a 13th name has appeared. During some down time another of my players wished to no longer be a "next in line" for his house. Because of the circumstances he is no longer a noble, lives in a shack in the woods and erased an older sister and nephew from existence. On a subsequent session this same player wished again for the Nephew (who was erased) to be safe as the party have retained memories from previous realities but the NPC's don't, because of some more crazily lucky rolls the Nephew is alive and working as a spy for the order they are a part of as the right-hand man of the person they are here to stop.
I think you can see where this is going... the 13th name that has appeared on the List is that of the Nephew but only the wearer of the armour knows this as this entity is evil and wants to feed on as many souls as possible.
I guess my question is... How, when it comes to it, do I stop this from devolving into PVP when the inevitable takes place? I have some ideas already but i wanted to also ask the hive mind of DMs for advice.
1. Give the player some kind of out that can remove the nephew from the list, drawing the armor's attention to someone else at the last minute when they complete some quest or ritual.
2. Lean into it, but just put off the moment when they confront the nephew (and then each other) as close to the end of the campaign as you can so it doesn't cast a pall over the rest of the game and works as a more climactic ending.
