looking for a bit of advice, I’m using milestone levelling in Curse of Strahd. I’ve home-brewed a fair bit of the module to better fit my group of friends and because the initial encounters were too easy for 5/6 characters. They started at lv3 as recommended, for to lv4 after getting the tome os Strahd and having a a big zombies fight in the Village of Barovia because I wanted to start with something epic. They got to lv5 after the bone grinder.
the party has just finished valaki, they managed to avoid a tpk by outsmarting the 6 vampire spawn and to keep the level of danger high I introduced a new fight with a higher level (cr8) vamp and a small dragon (also CR8) who were using the spawn as a diversion to hunt for Ireena. A player wanted to change character so I added an encounter to embed them into the adventure with them being hunted by a Alhoon, a couple intellect devourers and zombies (combined cr16) in a fight to forge the party in fire, Went really well. The group left a couple loose ends and enemies in the shadows were able to convince guards the party were murderers so we got a chase encounter where they had to escape Valaki. They are now at Ravenloft having had a dinner invitation.
my question is, should this be enough to get to level 6? I know it’s not achieving major objectives like artefacts or restoration of argynvostholt but it is quite a lot of chaos and big fights?
thanks in advance for any feedback.
update: forgot to mention, in the chaos with the 6 vampires the bones got lost so this level would be instead of restoring the church
Why wouldn't it be enough for a level? If you believe it's not then at least give them inspiration for it.
There's over 20 achievements in Curse of Strahd that are significant enough to justify a level increase. What I did was pick a few for the actual level up and set the rest as earning Inspiration. The obvious milestones are finding the relics to use against Strahd. But then rescuing Mad Mary's daughter I thought would be noteworthy enough to earn a reward as well.
