So, I threw in a set of Horseshoes of a Zephyr to a loot stash the players found. They don't generally keep horses, just rent them when needed. So they asked me if they killed a horse and had its hooves made in to boots, could they affix the hooves to the boots and two of them could get the bonus from them. I said no, they only work as a set all on the same creature. But now I am afraid of what they come up with next! LOL

Players are like that. I assume they're going to try to shapechange somebody into a centaur next.

They suggested the druid wildshaping in to a horse to use them, I said they could but to remember that horseshoes get nailed in to the hooves and when the druid wildshapes back to dwarf form those hooves return to being their very fleshy hands and feet, lol

Eh, I suggest not discouraging them too much. If you give them the item, the expectation is that they're going to use it. Throwing arbitrary barriers up makes things less fun. (And quite possibly disagrees with the way wild shape interacts with equipment and certainly the way it interacts with damage.) As it is, they'll presumably have to re-apply them every time, which is not particularly fast. (And who says magic horseshoes can't be affixed magically?)

I agree, don't give them something without thinking of how crazy they might be in trying to use it, but at the same time, now that this is all out, you an always allude to a horse in the next town or they can meet an npc with a FABULOUS and BEAUTIFULY horse that they might be willing to sell or might be willing to buy the horseshoes for a lot of money... though a lot of money instantly makes them want to buy overpowered stuff).
If your players aren’t scaring you, then they aren’t doing their job, lol.
Whenever you think “players will do this”, be aware that somewhere out the universe is a tiny fairy whose sole job is to make sure of two things: That they won’t do that, or they will argue about doing that and probably not do it anyway. Lil critter will fly straight away, lol.

LOL, too true, we have an entire side plot that has developed that is probably ultimately going to wind up with them traveling all the way to freaking THAY because they went way off in left field with a couple throwaway bits of flavor I tossed in for a random encounter!
I haven't had this in dnd but I recently learnt there is an official spell in pathfinder 2e where you make a homunculus of a bird that can spy for you but in order to learn what the bird knows you have to murder it and drink it's blood.
Not to mention the dark urge in BG3. Something about RPGs seems to bring this out in people...
I also love how the idea of buying a horse seems to simply have been skipped over.
