I'd recommend you skim through the whole book and write down the major NPCs and their motivations because it can be a lot to keep track of. The story also doesn't have a ton of buy-in with some of the suggested backstory hooks, so during your read-through i'd suggest writing down some longer-term motivations to give to your players.
The module is written and laid out very simply and chronologically, so it's really easy to replace some encounters with homebrew/more fun stuff if you want, or skip over things, and still keep the campaign generally on track.
That being said i ran it heavily homebrewed and finished at level 7 with a journey to the feywild, a fetch quest for the dragon masks, and a final battle in front of Tiamat's prison. It was a fun time.
