Trying to use a projector to share the map with my group (I run the D&D club at my school). Is there a way to actually have the fog of war shown. The only way I have been able to do it is showing my map, so fog of war isn't completely covered and monster tokens are not hidden. I guess I am asking is there a way to project what the players should see as the DM or do I have to just have them look at it on their computers? It would be so much easier if I could project it.
Interesting...I didn't think of that, that might work...but won't that skew the encounter with an extra player? I am going to have to play around with it...but our first session is tomorrow...I will just use a map without fog till I figure it out.
I don't see how it would skew the encounter. Don't you as the DM set the encounter? If it's a module the encounter shouldn't change unless you change it. You shouldn't even need to make a character for it. You just need to add a player account and reveal for the players while projecting what that account sees. I don't use D&D Beyond for game play so I can't be of more help than that.
If you are using maps on D&D Beyond, they just introduced spectator mode for exactly this purpose - it allows the DM to project a player view of the map.
If you are using Discord then you can use a secondary account registered as a player in the game to stream what that account can see from whatever VTT you are using and project that.
You can do something similar with Roll20 and just displaying the screen from a player perspective.
Keep in mind that having an "NPC" displaying the screen doesn't affect the adventure in any way since they don't have to participate in the encounter. You could even just get one of your players to log in and the just project their screen instead of yours.

You would probably need to make a player account for yourself and hook to the projector.

I need to go back and look for spectator mode...I didn't see it. Thank you
