Hey everyone, I have been successful compressing down my maps in the past so that erasing fog of war during play is less laggy but this weeks map is a pretty big maze. I have gotten it down to 9.9mb in JPG format and I have also tried converting to a 7.4mb WEBP file but both are horribly laggy when trying to reveal parts of the map. Am I going about this correctly by compressing the image down or do I need to mess with the export settings in DudgeonDraft? I am currently exporting as a JPEG at 25% quality and Gird PPI set to 200
Remember that Maps (assuming you mean D&D Beyond) is in Alpha, meaning it's not in a useable state. I'd extropolate from that it's not been optimised or prepared well for its purposes. I know when I tried using it again last week not all of my players were able to even use the maps feature here. Add to that the fact that D&D Beyond already doesn't function well across every browser: I'd say it's just a quirk of the Mpas feature rather than anything you are doing wrong.
Maps is a pretty poor attempt and if we're being generous, still in early stages of development. I would suggest expecting it to lag and be slow.
Yes I understand that but if we don't experiment and give feedback it wont get better either. I have no issues using it 99% of the time with my players. The only thing is the larger, more detailed the map is the worse the lag gets when uncovering fog of war. With that said I have improved it by messing with the export settings so I was just curious if anyone else has been experimenting and having better results adjusting a specific setting.
I hop on every month or so to give it a go with my players or a group of other GMs I'm a part of. I entirely know what you're saying and I agree. That said, in my (our) experience, it hasn't improved since the release of the Alpha. I genuinely think it is just a tokenistic attempt at this point. It's a nice perk for sure if you're a subscriber and does mean you don't have to do loads of extra stuff.
